Yeah, and that’s really more of a personal resonance thing that I rank it that high. First album I ever walked into a store and bought with my own money.
The Search for Everything is hindered by some truly baffling album sequencing choices. One of 2-3 albums I ever just changed the order of in my iTunes library, because the album works so much better if you present the songs in a different sequence.
I still really wonder what happened there. My guess is that he had one plan and then the label put the kibosh on that.

Where The Light Is Born & Raised Continuum — Battle Studies Heavier Things — Sob Rock Paradise Valley Room For Squares The Search for Everything Paradise Valley has moved up a slot because there’s actually more strong songs on that scattershot b-sides record than on TSFE. I literally never listen to RFS so I can’t justify it being any higher.
I was like 17 when Room for Squares came out and hated it, now I love it. Finally learned to play "No Such Thing" and for an ubiquitously popular radio song, that track has some really interesting chord progressions happening
I think "Clarity", "Come Back to Bed", "Split Screen Sadness" and "Wheel" are all better than anything on Room for Squares. "Bigger Than My Body" is better than most of it. "Daughters" and "Only Heart" hurt Heavier Things a bit but they're about the same level as "Not Myself", "Great Indoors" and "City Love".
Room for Squares is just criminally underrated. Such sharp, smart songwriting across that album, and you can already see how versatile he is. I had Heavier Things above it for years for sentimental reasons, but I eventually realized that I was just reaching for Squares way more often. I think it's lyrically a stronger record and covers more musical ground.
I really really love Something’s Missing. that opening chord alone hits me deep in the core of my being.
