Why You No Love Me is my nomination for John’s worst songs in his discography. Awful. I enjoy the rest of the album. Til The Right One sounds like it had some Talking Heads influence to the production. One of my favorites. I relate to the lyrics. I’ve been single for so long, I’m not in any rush to settle with the next person lol. Last Train Home has been on repeat the last few weeks. Shouldn’t Matter But It Does would have worked better later in the album. Having it 2nd after Last Train Home feels like the album loses momentum right away. The new songs are good but with New Light, I Guess I Just Feel Like, and Carry Me Away being out for so long this feels like it needs 2 or 3 more songs on it.
that song and title are both bad, very bad. I really enjoy this record though. A couple new tracks I can consider god tier JM. Don't think it's going to be something I necessarily have on repeat but it's definitely my favorite thing he's done since B&R
This was fine. Someone else said it, but pretty easy listening stuff. Probably the most I’ve enjoyed music of his in like a decade, still don’t know how much I’ll be coming back to it. Also as bad as that song title is, it’s wild that people think the song itself is that bad lol. Idk how you could like this record and hate that song that much, let alone dislike it more than the entire collection of clunkers he’s put on other records
Yeah, I can live without that song as well, only because I just don't like it. wouldn't be the first song of his I just don't like. Changing is a song I could live without as well. that is all.
It really surprises you that a wildly dumb and misguided lyrical concept would ruin a song enough for it to be notably worse than all the other songs on this record that don't have that same problem? That's...a weird take. Idk, the problem I have with this song is a very specific issue, and one I can't think of any other songs in his catalog sharing.
I kinda liked the song before I came in here and read how problematic it was I'll just slink away with my head down now haha
I mean, you’re historically an extremely lyric focused person when it comes to music haha. To me, they barely even register on a first listen through. If the lyric is what ruins the track for you to degree of it being the worst song of his catalogue — sure, I understand where you’re coming from. From where I’m sitting, it was just another song on the record in the same sonic vein as all the rest. Some of the comments I’ve seen in here disparaging the track seem to intentionally separate the negative thoughts on the song from just the title/lyric itself, that’s the only reason I said anything!
Ha, yeah, I get that I listen more for lyrics than most people. This one is hard to miss because it’s the title and the chorus just repeats it over and over again. And the other lines in the chorus (“why you no even care” and “why you no will be there”) are maybe even dumber. Musically, the song is perfectly pleasant. But I just think the whole concept of the song is such a swing and a miss that it sticks out like a sore thumb, both on this album and in the catalog. I think he’s someone who has often written smarter and more thoughtful lyrics than he generally gets credit for, and this is…not that.
The lyric sucks in many ways and hurts the song but also even sonically and melodically it kinda sucks. the verses aren't horrible but they would still probably be my least favourite part of the album. the chorus gets worse with every listen though, the delivery just feels silly and dumb to me. He honestly hasn't put out too many songs I dislike but that's one of them.
After a handful of listens to the album, if I try to hum or sing the melody over the song I still feel like I'm flat out guessing where it is supposed to go. It's so busy and the harmonies backing the lead vocal up are so loud and have so much low end, it's lacking some clarity. tldr: bad melody
I'm sure John will get to a time (probably sooner rather than later) where this song is on the same list of "Songs I'll never perform ever again" along with Your Body is a Wonderland.
Fairly boring, but then again, I've found his solo stuff to be fairly boring for a while now. Don't think there's anything on here that'll really stick with me.
After one listen this is about as uninspired as I've ever heard John Mayer sound. Turns out releasing 3 of 10 songs two years in advance and making the rest either sound identical or as boring as possible isn't a good recipe for an interesting album With everything John Mayer is capable of, listening to him on autopilot is a stinky turd
The Search for Everything has more knockouts for me, even though its inept sequencing and bizarre rollout took a lot away from it. Paradise Valley is typically my lowest ranked Mayer album, despite some big highlights.
I think I like this about as much as the last two, which is still a fair amount but its been almost a decade since he's really wowed me with an album.
Echoing the thread, Why You No Love Me is easily the worst song I've heard him do. I can't believe he chose to keep that over some of the other material he probably had. I do dig the rest of the album though. Just that one song is a hard pass.
Think overall I like this more than Search, agree though that album has some really high highs. Definitely better than PV, probably would put it over Room For Squares as well
This has real "I guess it's fine" energy. Not very cohesive or interesting from a songwriting perspective. Safe music for a kid's birthday party playlist where you want zero people to notice the music.
