To be honest I think I like this more than any Weakerthans release. And I've been a Weakerthans fan for a long time...
Well I mean it's obviously too early to know for sure but that's the feeling I get. Every once and a while I get on a Weakerthans kick and listen to all their stuff repeatedly for a week or so but they never actually seem to make it into my regular rotation. Whereas I feel like this probably will be for a long time.
I doubt I'll prefer this to any one of the four but I do think I like it more than provincial. I'm definitely glad this one seems to be pretty unanimously loved tho
Pretty fantastic setlist from Toronto last night, damn. It's not what I expected but I'm a fan of it for sure. Wish he was playing all four Virtute songs though, not that I am seeing him any time soon. John K. Samson Setlist at Virgin Mobile Mod Club, Toronto
amazing set, need a headliner. absolutely a must see for me, one of the artists/bands on my bucket list at this point
Thought a lot about this album today, and listened to it multiple times. These lines in particular really resonate right now. "So take that laminate out of your wallet and read it And recommit yourself to the healing of the world And to the welfare of all creatures upon it Pursue a practice that will strengthen your heart" "This crop withstood the months of snow Scavengers and blight Tuned every year towards a tiny lengthening of light Found a way to rise We know this world is good enough because it has to be Allow the hope that we will meet again out in the winter wheat" And "Virtute At Rest" made me cry again.
Love those lines from the title track ^^^ I also adore the image these lines put in my head. such a beautiful picture painted in my mind from these words: "Woke up in a parking lot, air-mattresses gone flat, the sun selecting targets for the shadows to attack. So make a visor with your hand and squint at where you’re from— a lonely line of buildings you can block out with your thumb" This is one of my favorite albums of the year
Alberta right? Edit: Edmonton. Now I remember... because I made a CFL joke once.... speaking of which, my RBs just beat the Eskimos
not a CFL fan in the slightest, sorry haha. always down for hockey though as i get older i find i have this special connection to Canadian bands / artists that i love. its kind of like cheering for a sports team and having favorite players. when these artists / bands are putting out awesome material, it just makes me love my team (Canada) for some strange reason
I feel you. But it's also kind of upsetting that even most Canadians don't know a lot of Canadian music. Even The Weakerthans or John K Samson aren't even close to being house hold names. Maybe in Winnipeg. But I guess that's also super subjective. I'm sure someone else knows some Canadian artists they feel should be on everyone's radar that I've never heard of.
Im thinking of spinning this on the way home from where i spent new years eve. Its a good first album of the year haha "We know this world is good enough because it has to be"
