I love Sweetness. It's simple, and that's what makes it huge for me. It summarises a failed relationship with a teather ball that broke out of the pole and rope. Get hit/hurt/argue too much and the relationship will break while the ball is in motion. You spin, free, out of control until you collide into something or the ground.
I wouldn't call it "standard." It's really the only song in the catalog that is written like that. There are no verses. It's basically just chorus and pre-chorus. It's definitely an unusual song. Just not one I find to be very substantive or engaging.
But does it really matter? The song is so addictive that the lyrics (still pretty good IMO) don't particularly matter.
But it does have verses? It's a massive, upbeat JEW song like other massive upbeat JEW songs. It fits in perfectly with BA
This thread took a weird turn lol. I totally get what you're saying Craig, I just don't agree. Sweetness was my first JEW song so I'm completely biased
I'm assuming you consider this the chorus: "I was spinning free With a little sweet and simple numbing me" The unique part of the song is that the next lines basically blend into the chorus. They could be the next part of the chorus, or they could be the prechorus to the next chorus. "So tell me what do I need (Tell me what do I need) When words lose their meaning (When words lose their meaning)" or "I'm still running away (I'm still running away) I won't play your hide and seek game (Your hide and seek game)" I have personally never heard those as verses. I think there's an argument to be made that the entire song is one big chorus. Which is kind of cool, in a way, but not my favorite style of writing.
Disintegration is a monster track, for sure. I had almost forgotten how great of a song Closer is. Every non-remix song on the EP is pretty much perfect, but Closer has to be my favorite. It's tied with Disintegration, at least.
Stay On My Side Tonight (sans the Drugs or Me remix) is one of my favorite EPs of all time. Was so happy when JEW played most of those tracks as their encore on the Futures 10 Year Anniversary Tour.
I always forget how much I love Christmas Card... Probably not a popular opinion but that might honestly be my favorite JEW b-side.
Considering listening to the entire JEW discography from SP to Damage today: should I go chronological or reverse chronological? Or worst to best (but still all very good): Static Prevails, Damage, Chase This Light, Bleed American, Invented, Clarity, Futures?
Even if you put the emphasis on the hook and not the lyrics....the hook sucks and is totally annoying. I dislike very few JEW songs, but man, I really hate that one.
Yeah, "Sweetness" is definitely one of their weakest songs for me. Annoying (one could describe it as empty too) is the right word. And JEW is my second favorite band of all-time...
The way you guys feel about Sweetness is how I feel about The Middle. Sweetness just has a really nice tone and sound to it and is very pleasant to listen to while keeping it bouncy and fun. Middle is just a garbage tier cash grab liked only by hipster sneks like Taylor Swift.
My top ten favorites as of today. 1. Table for Glasses 2. The Middle 3. Closer 4. 23 5. A Praise Chorus 6. Heart Is Hard To Find 7. Invented 8. Dizzy 9. For Me This Is Heaven 10. Believe In What You Want If Jim solo counts put "Hell" somewhere in there too.
Pretty sure Taylor Swift is the opposite of hipster Also, I hope you know that just because a song blew up doesn't mean the band wrote it as a "cash grab"
Not just that but it's just a weirdly sexist comment to make. Who cares if Swift only likes The Middle (which she doesn't)
