Does anyone else think Jim sounds different on let it happen than he does on the rest of the album? Not sure what it is. A little bit more nasally maybe
I'll have to check that out later to refresh my mind. I have juuuust enough time to spin Damage before work. I owe the thread another listen, haha. There are a lot of sad lyrics in this, especially the title track, but I think my experiences with the record paint them in a more positive outlook. Lyrics like the chorus of Damage is really sad and hopeless, but I can't help but associate it with my ex who was really unresponsive and distant during the end of the relationship but now we talk more than ever. It's sort of like how, if we continued dating, we would be "too damaged now to possibly connect". It's a personal ode on how the break up was a good thing. I have other personal associations with the lyrics that make it bit by bit more positive, but I think if you gave me this record today with no prior experience, I'd without a doubt think it's their most sad. Funny how life alters interpretetation, huh?
To be fair, I did provide insight on why exactly the emotes that "happy" feel for me! It's all about the personal experience. It was the soundtrack of decaying romantic love transforming into platonic love. Lyrics like "Thank you honey for reminding me how long you could stare at someone and never see, really see. I want so bad just to understand. Not gonna let more time go without trying" have a completely different meaning to me than it would to other people. But yeah I understand why someone would think my interpretation of Damage to be weird, haha
You Were Good is their saddest to me, I think. Probably because of my own personal connection to it, it just really cuts deep.
