It’s one of my favorites on Invented! Action Needs An Audience is one I’m conflicted on. Love the rockier sound but it sounded better live with Jim on lead vocals.
My hot take is that Chase This Light is one of their weaker albums. It was an attempt to try to recapture some of their success from Bleed American and resulted in some, albeit still strong but sterile songs. Still has some gems though (Gotta Be somebody's Blues, Big Casino, Dizzy, Electable) but also some CVS music.
As I wrote that, looking back at the track list, I still like every song (though "Carry You" is a bit bland) but compared to the rest of their catalog, definitely on the lower tier. "Chase This Light" (the song) is definite CVS-core.
I really like Higher Devoton. I’ve always interpreted the album as a failing relationship, where the girl’s POV (i think? Cut and Stop, and the album art, make me think that?) is someone who is trying to work up the courage to finally leave, and Higher Devotion does an excellent job alongside Evidence at presenting the cracks of the relationship, with HD being about failed communication styles
I usually only ever listen to everything pre-Chase This Light. I just hit play on CTL though to do a "later discography" run.
That’s what happens when a band doesn’t release an album for centuries, people get feral A new album will purify this thread from the dark energy emanating from it
I do miss the days of...someone adjacent to the band? leaking the album demos...would be fun to hear early versions of Invented and Damage songs.
If "Carry You" was a liiiiiittle slower, people would probably say "this belongs on Futures" and they'd love it.
