Yea it’s not discographysplain. I was just happy to hear the band get so much well deserved love. I also like the callout of influencing taylor; I’ve been hearing jim sing “clean” in my head some 1989 came out haha
Episodes likely Jimmy and third eye blind are always going to be losing battles for them. Massive bands but bands whose fanbases are still somewhat “culty” (not in a negative sense but just smaller than what their sales/streaming would suggest). The best episodes are ones like the pavement one or their ones for older bands where the bands are either truly a bit more underground or old enough where most people listening to the pod are too young to have been there. I enjoyed the episode and I get why it bugged you guys but I’d also imagine you guys are kind of the only people who listened and were bugged haha.
The weezer one is the worst example of this to me. Basically yada yadas everything after the green album and the guest was someone who has actually toured with weezer. Not to pit the two bands against each other but at least with Weezer some of the latter albums they basically skipped were still “hits”/sold a ton
The grunge and Britpop seasons were great bc even when you had the massive bands that they kinda skimmed over, there was a lot of spillover from one episode to the next bc the bands were all so tightly connected. Since it seems like she’s going back to doing one off bands and not scenes as a whole, I def prefer more underground band episodes
Also not to post AGAIN but I grant them a lot of leeway because there are so few music podcasts out there that are actually entertaining. After years of nothing music wise from the ringer, bandsplain and 60 songs are both highly entertaining just bc the hosts, even if they aren’t like an actual information dump or whatever
The smiths episode was pretty wild. She used to do like track by track breakdowns of every song. It was awesome
the JEW episode was pretty good (i mean, i totally paused the episode to give Clarity another full listen for the thousandth time thanks to the convo between Yasi and Chris), but i did want more time spent on the later years. the latest season of bandsplain has me wondering if the higher-ups are pushing for more truncated episodes, especially since they've incorporated the video element.
Bandsplain is good because it’s either a perfect intro if you’re uninformed on the band or just great vibes if you are. Like listening this one I almost paused like 6 times to just go listen to the records cuz the enthusiasm in the better episodes just makes you want to. It does seem like they’re on the comparatively shorter side now, I wonder if the metrics said people weren’t finishing most from the last couple seasons edit: I see this was covered exactly 5 min ago lol
I am just keen to listen to Chris Ryan talk Jimmy Eat World for a few hours - never knew he was a fan!
I enjoyed the Bandsplain episode but I felt like it really underplayed the consistency of JEW's output. It's one of the reasons why their legacy is so strong. They're one of a few bands where if somebody said any of their albums was their favorite, it would be hard to argue against it.
I love Chris, but Andy Greenwald may have done a better job since he still keeps up with the band’s music. He interviewed Jim for his podcast during the Integrity Blues press cycle. And his brief interview at the end of the 60 Songs episode of The Middle touched on later period stuff. For example, he really likes Invented and is a Something Loud defender. And the highlights playlist he shared along with that episode covers the full timespan of the band.
Song is a true feather in their cap. I constantly go back and forth whether I prefer the electric or acoustic version more.
Some folks on the band’s subreddit either don’t like it or are “tired” of it in every set. (It goes off live, so it should be there imo.)
Ronald Mcdonald loves Failure and thinks it's one of their best singles? What world are we living in lol
I like "Failure" a lot - it's too short to make a huge impression on its own, but it would've fit nicely on Surviving and, along with the other b-sides we've gotten since, elevated that album nicely

"Delivery" might be my favorite song from the whole thing, but I'm totally cool with never hearing "555" again as long as I live
