    I hate spoilers. Supporter

There is no thread on chorus or anywhere else where I completely agree with so many different rankings. They’re legit the best band. It’s not even close.

Does anyone have a Jimmy album that is beloved but reminds you of a very difficult period of your life so even though you also love it, it also has the unfortunate adverse effect of putting you in a bit of a weird headspace?

Futures is that album for me. I absolutely adore it and think it might be their masterpiece, but the tone of the entire product right down to that dark, lonely, cold, isolating cover art so perfectly encapsulates a very specific mood and tumultuous period of life I was trapped in when that album dropped. I put it on and can appreciate it from a new perspective and relief for what I have now and who I am now, but it’s just one of those albums for me that’s difficult not to get pulled back into a specific place and time in life I do not necessarily enjoy revisiting. Like I can put on Polaris and hear those mournful guitars in the verses and feel the chills and try very hard not to go back there, you know? I have this extremely vivid memory of my excitement in the buildup to the album’s release and driving up to the local Best Buy where I sat in the lot until they opened the store. I went in, picked up my copy at long last, excitedly walked out to my car, went to put the CD in, and then stopped upon just staring at the cover art. I remember the joy just absolutely leaving my body as I looked over at the passenger seat where there was no one, looked out at the empty parking lot where there was not a soul in sight, and sat there quietly remembering how alone I was while the music started playing. Didn’t feel great. That was a very long period of life and I really have to fight with myself not to go back there when I put Futures on despite how much I love it.

Took me forever to listen to Damage because I was in the midst of a breakup when it was released and it hit too close to home.

According to how this community talks about Damage, I was expecting you to end with “…when I finally got around to listening I was incredibly let down.”

    I enjoy that album a lot ‍♂️

I don’t know how “beloved” this album is, relative to some of their other albums, but Integrity Blues is that album for me. Came out during a time I was struggling deeply with depression and alcohol. I have a lot of love for that album, but, while I’m more than six years sober and in a much better place in my life, it puts me back in that headspace a bit so I don’t revisit it often.

Integrity Blues came out at a time in my life where I was basically unemployed, my uni degree felt worthless because I couldn't get a full-time job afterwards and my best friend at the time had suddenly and with no good reason severed ties with me and basically acted like I didn't exist. So that album found me at a very bad place in my life and some of those songs lyrically really spoke to me, so it's a record I will always hold close to my heart and high up my Jimmy power rankings.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

just finished the Jimmy chapter in Dan Ozzi's Sellout. really great stuff there. kind of vaguely terrifying how Clarity might not have existed if Capitol didn't decide for no good reason to order a second album from them

oh also pretty dope getting the meaning behind "run around and jump the fence / GRAAAAAVEYARD" after just thinking it was words for years. I know y'all don't love Static Prevails but I'll always have a soft spot for it

I'm sad to say that I went to a Dear and the Headlights/Paramore/Jimmy Eat World show when I was a teenager and left a couple songs into Jim to beat the traffic

    I was so dumb

Start with Futures if you like 23, then maybe go to Bleed American or Chase This Light and work your way out from there

    Fight the long defeat.

I enjoyed Bleed American and Futures first, took a break, then circled back around when Surviving pulled me back in! I'd heard the intervening albums, of at least parts of them, but it took some time before they took root. From there, Chase This Light, Integrity Blues, and finally Invented found their places. Having written that, I guess the journey's ongoing! Hope you enjoy working through their catalog.

Make sure you don't skip the Stay On My Side Tonight EP. Disintegration is easily in the top 5 songs out of their whole discography for me.

It’s wild to me to think about someone hearing Jimmy for the first time. I’d love to experience that first time again (side note: picked up bleed American on release because I liked the song. Knew nothing about them. That was the only CD I took with me on a school trip to Italy and my love affair began)
