The leaked copy I downloaded of "Futures" had "Drugs or Me" labeled as "Drugs For Me" and that's how I've always thought of it.
I still sing the demo lyrics of that song that had "we all end up shaking for our love" over the album version lmao
i used to not like Drugs or Me when i was younger but i think i was just an angsty kind with no patience for ballads lol. i absolutely adore it now
Here’s some potential hot takes. Thinking, That’s All is super underrated. Your New Aesthetic is the 2nd best Clarity song (behind For Me This Is Heaven of course) The Middle was overrated even before it blew up (I wanted Get It Faster as the 2nd single at the time! Glad my 15 year old self wasn’t in charge) Nothing Wrong/Night Drive/23 is their greatest three peat string of songs ever. (And I knoooow how much you guys dislike those first two) I just never understood the almost unanimous love for Dizzy, I just think it’s okay - I much prefer Electable and Gotta Be Somebody’s Blues Higher Devotion and Action Needs An Audience both rock! But this is the first album where I can’t even remember how songs like Stop/Littlething/Cut even sound like from memory, and I’ve listened to the album numerous times aware of this Same goes for Please Say No/How’d You Have Me/No, Never - they’re just so unmemorable to me. Book Of Love though, possible top 5 jimmy song of all time, or close to it. Also love Appreciation and always found You Were Good to be their most underrated closer. I find Integrity Blues to be one of their most consistent albums. But while I actually like every song, the highs aren’t as high as they are on other albums. Who cares about recency bias, Congratulations might very well be a top 5 Jimmy song ever! Don’t understand the love for 555 though, don’t care for that one as much.
my favorite Clarity song is either the title track or 12.23.95. the former is the one i come back to the most, but the latter feels surreal whenever i play it in the context of the album. the whole world comes to a stop for that song.
yeah all this got me listening to Invented for the first time in a long while multiple times. For whatever reason, I never come back to it all that much in the past and subconsciously always grouped Invented and Damage together as far as quality....but yeah no. Invented is damn good and far superior to Damage.
I love Futures, but Drugs or Me is probably my least favorite track on the album. It’s too maudlin, and I’ve always found the lyrics too on the nose and almost unintentionally funny in their delivery and the context of the music. Feels like it would work better as an uptempo, jangly Smiths song.
It's the use of "the drugs" as a phrase that really helps sink the song for me and makes it kinda impossible to take seriously. Gives it a weird 90s afterschool special feeling.
I don’t mind it. Flat out saying drugs is okay in the context of the record when Pain was before it mentioning pills. It feels connected, esp with the transition
Completely random, but my brain always tries to fuse Coldplay’s Yes and Jimmy Eat World's Gotta Be Somebody’s Blues together. I can't listen to one without feeling like the other is just going to magically bleed into it.
Still coming down from the high of seeing the boys last night, was feeling nostalgic and ran across this set from 2002 I hadn’t seen before. Some great deep cuts. Also features a funny fuck up on Lucky Denver Mint where Jim forgets to end the first chorus.
