It was posted early on YouTube and I remember seeing an embed for it on this thread last week, before it got deleted. Surprised it still isn't out.
Anais, My Best Theory, higher devotion, stop, cut, evidence are all great songs. For whatever reason i dont go back to invented a ton but its a good album.
Invented is an awesome album. I hate Higher Devotion. It is probably my least favorite Jimmy Eat World song. I don't mean offense to Tom, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I wish Jim sang Action Needs An Audience, because he's just a better singer and it's a good song. I've never liked the song Mixtape at all though. You have the epic title track right there, and it's always felt to me like the obvious closer. Plus, I've always had a very visceral and negative reaction to the lyrics. I'm not exactly sure what he's singing about, but it's always sounded to me like someone telling someone else at the end of a relationship that they don't get to walk away now, which makes my skin crawl. I could have the song completely wrong, but that's just always how it struck me so I've always just skipped it.
In regards to Mixtape, I’ve always read the narrator’s “you” to be self-referential. I do that a lot in my writing. Like they are putting an old mixtape on, remembering old thoughts, accepting the fault of the fall of the relationship, and can’t walk away (forget the memories). However, the “What where you protecting yourself from” line doesn’t really work with this reading, unless they were too guarded to open up and that’s the reason the relationship ended.
I like Action Needs An Audience, but now I'm imagining it with Jim's vocals and yeah it would be way better.
All of the talk last night lead me to throw Invented on for my drive home from work, and I'm thinking the same thing is in order again tonight. Such a great album. Their next album was phenomenal as well, but I digress.
honestly after all this Invented listening i think i might be slowly developing the opinion that JEW's best records come every other album, starting from Clarity (which would included Clarity, Futures, Invented, and Integrity Blues). Bring on the next one.
