I love Invented, though it drops off for me a bit towards the end. I don’t really like Auction in the context of the record, as while it does appreciate a fast and heavy song after 3 softer ones, I think it’s a bit empty sonically after the beautifully painted landscapes in the middle section*. I have the same gripe with Coffee too; I feel it’s a bit too straightforward. My Best Theory works as a rock song in the record bc it’s so early on and the album has yet to unravel. I don’t wanna hear Coffee after Movielike or Auction after Stop/Littlething/Cut. The album, I think, would benefit from those being cut and adding Anais where Auction is. While it’s still a jammer like the other two, it has very cool and pristine guitar soundscapes that match say, what Higher Devotion and Theory were doing earlier. Also, I don’t like Mixtape as a closer. It should’ve ended with Invented imo. * = Auction’s chorus is loud and full, I will admit. I’m more so referring to how barren the verses can be, esp coming off of the aforementioned trio
Invented Tiers: Extremely Good Invented Littlething Mixtape Good Cut Stop Evidence Average Movielike Anais Coffee and Cigarettes (Acoustic) Coffee and Cigarettes Below Average Higher Devotion (Edit: I forgot this one initially, which says a lot) Heart is Hard to Find Literally The Worst My Best Theory Action Needs an Audience Final verdict: Pretty good album with two rock songs that just plain don't work and a slow beginning. Maybe if the clapping wasn't so obnoxious in Heart is Hard to Find I'd enjoy it more.
I agree that Higher Devotion and Action Needs an Audience are the weak points on the album and I think the album would have been better off without them and with Anais in between Cut and Invented
Action Needs An Audience is great. Wish JEW would do more loud rock songs. Really fuck their audience up.
I always enjoyed their cover of "You And I" off of the deluxe version. Wouldn't work on the album, but glad it's there somewhere.
My best theory is terrible. Worst song on the album pretty handily imo Not sure how noticeable it is to you, but damage is supposed to be a breakup concept record iirc
I love that cover. Always a nice chaser to “Mixtape” when it would come up on the deluxe CD I had in the car for like a year.
I love MBT. It's so good. The lead guitar is super eerie and I love how it's hinted at in the first verse and then steals the show in the second verse. It plays off the base really well. The bridge is absolutely massive too. The only gripe I have with it is that I don't really like the lyrics all that much but the hook is catchy when it comes on
As much as I love Invented, Coffee and Cigarettes is one of my least favorite JEW songs of the past 23 years.
Wow. I never knew C&C was so divisive! It's one of my favorite songs on Invented. I absolutely hate Higher Devotion though, so go figure.
all of Invented fucking rules also what happened to that second new song they announced? is it just delayed indefinitely or
