I’m not “positioning myself as the band’s defender” nor do I think they are being “attacked.” Relax and go do something productive
If I'm wrong, I apologize, but it's the vibe you're giving off because to me, you're being a little aggressive in your posting. I mean, "project their issues with how they consume music"? Sorry, it's rubbing me the wrong way. I hate the insinuation that I have some kind of problem just because I have an opinion. EDIT: If I'm being honest, my feathers are already a little ruffled about something else, so it's probably easier for something to get under my skin at the moment.
It’s all good. I’m sorry that my posts came off aggressive. On the topic at hand, I also tend to consume music as albums or EPs rather than standalone singles, but I still get excited for new music and give it the time of the day it deserves. I also spend plenty of time jumping around from song to song from bands and artists as opposed to always consuming full releases so maybe that’s why I don’t mind when bands or artists release singles.
Hopefully they have plans to put out some singles on a regular basis, and then at the end of the cycle, release them all together on an EP or album so we can have a physical form of everything together. if they go route, that’s fine by me, and sounds kinda fun. But if they just want to put out a new song here and there on streaming and leave it at that, that’ll be a but of a bummer for us that love having a physical new Jimmy release in our paws.
I would be surprised if they are completely done making albums. If they are though it's quite a bummer as they're definitely a band that shines best in album form. I feel like that's a huge part of their identity. Oh well! I'm sure we've got some great stuff coming.
I’d bet good money they are not done with albums. But they’re also excited about being free and making music when and how they’re inspired. I don’t think many grasp how in HUGE minority any of us that listen to a full album are. People listen to their Spotify playlists. People like a song and will call that band one of their favorites and never have heard the full album. I talk to people all the time that are like I love band X, and they didn’t know about the past three albums. It’s the environment we’re in and IMO the result of algorithmic listening and playlist domination. And I fully expect this band to play in the “we are free to release some stuff when inspired” mode and then when they feel the itch to make a full album statement doing just that.
Putting it that way really gets me on board with what they're doing. And it is truly a great thing that they are as free as they are right now. I'd rather them make an album when they're inspired to do so then be forced to make one because of a contract and deliver something subpar that they don't feel good about. I'm thinking this is the best case scenario for them right now.
After reading through all the comments from the last several pages, all I see are people who love this band and want as much music from them as possible. What a wonderful sentiment to collectively share.
yeah, I mean they can do what they want but singles don’t have the gravitas or weight or excitement to them for me and I will be almost guaranteed to forget they exist more easily. I listened to Something Loud once when it came out and, although I really liked it, I figured it was part of a greater whole and haven’t returned to it and quite frankly barely remember how it sounds. the majority of listeners may just be singles-oriented but, personally, I just like having more to chew on. that said, it’s exceptionally rare a band lasts as long as this band does and it’s even rarer that they can sustain as high quality an output this band has. if this is just the way forward that excites them most right now and that’s gonna keep them going longer I will obviously take that gladly.
I know this is all true, and has been for a long time, but I still get bummed any time I think about the way even the average person who "likes music" interacts with music.
yeah I mean I'm the minority in my family and extended family - I'm the only one who really listens to full albums. My wife will when we are in the car together but usually she just chooses an artist and listens to their radio station on AM while my brother and sister only listen to playlists and all my in-law listen to singles. I have friends at work that will add albums to their AM library and then just keep the songs they like and delete the rest lol
I think releasing a batch of 10-11 songs still drums up more excitement in terms of streaming/social discourse than just releasing stand-alone singles which is why a lot of acts still release albums.
well it just depends - the fans of the artist are going to prefer the full albums but if you wanna reach a new audience releasing a single and hoping it gets rotation on playlists and what not is the move (if you want to reach a new audience) the music industry is so fucked up that there is no right or wrong way to release music because either way you aren't making money.
last paragraph here is deranged and i know so many people who do this all time deranged though are the people who listen to full albums but re-sequence it themselves
yeah agreed - I look at those people like they are a space alien or some shit. Really sicko shit honestly. you don't get the highs of California Kids without having to listen to Thank God for Girls goddammit
The only thing I worry about with this band and a single-based release schedule is that we might miss out on songs like 23 and Pol Roger, etc.
