I can't recommend starting with something as inaccessible as Clarity unless, as Zac said, you're really into emo.
thanks for the rec My taste is all over but I think I'd start with Clarity if it precedes BA chronologically since I've got a fondness for emo thanks!
I started with clarity, and while it took a while to click, it definitely piqued my interest in the band and their music. Honestly overall bleed American probably does make the most sense, while it's a bit on the poppier side, in general, it's a pretty good sampler of most of their sounds. Plus If You Don't Don't is their best song ;)
only songs I'm familiar with are the middle, for me this is heaven, and the final track on futures. that's why i name dropped their three respective lps. thanks for the recs tho, as divisive as they all kinda were. but i think that says something, which excites me :)
I started with Bleed American and Futures, and I feel like if you like those albums, you're going to dig it all.
Yeah, clarity came first. If you don't like it, though, I'd still say move on anyway. Each album is distinct enough that you could conceivably hate clarity and love bleed or chase this light or futures. I'm sure you'll find something you like, like Iago said. Enjoy! You're starting on a fun journey
I think it was the first song I heard by them (it was that or APC) so maybe that's why I love it so much. Idk. But I do~
I agree with this. I think Clarity is the album that kind of started it all for this band and it's really important for that and, imo, worth starting with first. And if it doesn't click with you as a whole (it took a while for me too) then you can just move onto Bleed American and come back to Clarity whenever you feel comfortable.
it was the first non major single I heard from the band and I was like "whoa, even their deep cuts are pretty good" and then went on from there.
If You Don't, Don't is a really good song. I think it'd be awesome to see this band throw it into their setlists as a deep cut when they tour next.
I wrote a review of clarity for my radio final I got a 97 on it I oughta find it. That was fun to write
Personally I love it, especially Love Don't Wait. But I did get to see him tour on it and meet him after the show, so I could be a little biased.
I mean, it took a few years for it to really set in with me as a whole, but even when I first listened to the album back in 2010 there were songs I was still able to grab onto: Lucky Denver Mint, Your New Aesthetic, and Ten immediately come to mind.
But I guess what I meant in my original post is that I don't think it's a far cry from anything they've done since, except maybe Chase This Light.
I'll agree on Lucky Denver Mint. Other than that, the record has always seemed so dense to me compared to their other work. Probably mostly because I'm really not an emo listener.
Didn't see this before I posted again, but I've always thought they changed drastically between Clarity and BA, and then only in smaller increments since.
I think a few songs on BA wouldn't feel out of place on Clarity: Bleed American, Get It Faster, Cautioners, My Sundown. Though I can see how someone would disagree with Get It Faster. I included that because, to me, it's for an edge to it similar to certain songs on Clarity
