Honestly, I've never loved the song, but I think having it as a lead single for the album diminished it for me. If it was first experience within the album, I think I'd look at it differently today.
My Best Theory is amazing, just like every other song on Invented. It rips live too. This band has never released a less than stellar single.
Just my opinion. Like I said, I'm talking more about what I believe is the songwriting influence of the producer than the mixing quality necessarily. The band comes to the studio with chords, riffs, melodies, rhythms and song structure. The producer tends to be influential in how synths are used and other flourishes like how and where to apply reverb, and tonal choices. There may be nothing wrong with an album's production but that doesn't mean there wasn't the potential for a different producer to have taken the songs in a different direction and make something great. There's nothing wrong with Higher Devotion's production, yet I can imagine ways that it could be better than it is, which speaks to the producer not doing a good enough job of mining the song's potential in my view. It's not about pure sound quality, it's about creativity and taste on the part of the producer, and I think JMJ for example has better taste and vision for a song's potential than Trombino did on Invented. Maybe I'm wrong and all of the creative decisions were made by the band. But Invented doesn't sound to me like an album with Jimmy Eat World in complete control and ownership of their sound. I could be wrong. Damage's quality isn't very good but the songs serve their purpose better than Invented IMO. I'd like to be able to have a different opinion than others on this forum without it being an offence. It's not like I expressed my opinion flippantly. I know you love Invented and I wish I did too, but I can't force myself to love something that I don't.
if this is directed at me I meant that comment lightheartedly! love both albums, love Jimmy, love life when I'm listening to Jimmy etc. I'm just jokin' around I didn't take any offense at all, but to be fair I didn't see your username when I posted the comment - I think you and I have discussed this enough times that we're probably never gonna change each others' minds on the subject, lmao. I like Damage a lot more nowadays, I'm really happy Invented grew on you a little bit, no need to take it further than that :D
I still think Damage sounds flatter than Chase This Light, Invented and Integrity Blues. I mention those other albums because they are closest in terms of release. That’s in no way an insult to the actual songs written for Damage, just production.
I feel like that style of production on Damage was intentional though. They wanted to make a grittier, rawer record.
Jim said he was inspired by Foo Fighters's Wasting Light when deciding to record Damage fully analogue. Straight to tape with no more than 3 takes.
It may been intentional, I just don’t think it sounded as good as anything else released around it. It feels flatter to me. That’s all really.
See..I feel the same way about Integrity Blues....I LOVE "You With Me" and that's it, I don't like anything else from the album. I hear so much love for it but I just can't connect. Anyway, I can't wait for their next album!
Not as extreme of a reaction as you, but I def have yet to connect with that album as much as many others have seemed to.
Of course, I didn't so much want to imply you were taking offence, more that I wanted to get ahead of any potential spiralling of the conversation if anyone did take offence. And you're right, you and I know each other pretty well by this point when it comes to our mutual fandom of this band and the way our preferences differ, so I don't think there's any risk of either one of us mistaking the other as just a hater or anything. I know your opinions on this band are honest and fair and I presume you'd say the same of me, even though we occasionally disagree.
I’d disagree hard, in fact some of their single choices have been poor IMO. My Best Theory, Big Casino and Get Right in particular are some of my least favorites off those albums I’m always ready to talk System of a Down
