I love CTL, but it's the only album that I find myself skipping tracks on besides Static Prevails. I love Firefight, Dizzy, Electable, Always Be, and Let it Happen though.
Woah, don't see a list like that a lot! I need to go back and listen to Invented. Been a couple years. I just remember it not standing out to me? Chase this light has some good songs but I'm not sure about that album as a whole.
Well, like I said - every one of these albums is incredible to me. Like, Clarity is #5 on my list, but it's a 9/10 record. It's degrees of greatness. That said, the case for Invented: - 'Heart' is just the best opener ever. It just sets a mood and a tone that the rest of the album follows - it's a standalone story in and of itself, but I think it also foreshadows what sort of album we're getting. - There are two stretches of songs ('Higher' through 'Coffee' and 'Stop' through 'Cut') that sound like movements in a play for me. They're very, very cinematic, and they build on each other in various ways. I feel like they were written to be put in the order they're in; they're cohesive and honestly seem to transport the listener to another place. Maybe it sounds cheesy or whatever, but I always imagine that I am (or can be) somewhere and someone else when listening. - I'll admit the closer isn't as good as on other records. '23' and 'Dizzy' are the best closers on any album ever, and 'Mixtape' isn't that good (or probably as good as 'Sundown'). But again - it's a 1-2 punch of it and 'Invented' that really gets to me. Those two songs together are dynamic, emotional, and a fantastic end to the record. I don't know - it isn't really attached to a specific moment in time for me or anything. I just think it's a masterpiece. I mean, I'd give the same praise to CTL and Futures and Bleed American (I do think there's a clear top 4; Clarity and Damage are wonderful, but I like my JEW to have the shiny production that they're missing. They're great albums that are just a notch below). But still - I think that they just did their best work on Invented.
You skip 'Work' and 'Sweetness'? That would explain why our lists are so different, as they would both be top 10 JEW songs for me (I think, at least. I can't imagine trying to whittle my list down to that small. But they're definitely favorites. As is Higher Devotion. I may just be a weirdo).
Maaaaaan. Sweetness is one of their best straight up pop songs, and Work is awesome. Cannot understand liking Nothingwrong or Drugs or Me over Work or Get It Faster (may be my least fav Jimmy song) over Sweetness
Okay, well I guess I didn't mean by far haha, Nothingwrong and If You Don't, Don't respectively are also close
No judgements here! I'll re-listen to invented and see if I can catch onto what you described :). 4-6 I feel are pretty even to me. I never listen to Static. Might need to check it out again. 1-Futures 2-Clarity 3-Bleed American 4-Invented 5-Chase This light 6-Damage 7-Static
If You Don't, Don't is my favorite song so my mind is blown Just Watch the Fireworks? For Me This Is Heaven? The World You Love?
I don't always make it through 'Goodbye Sky Harbor' because it's 16 minutes and that can be daunting.
But as long as we're being controversial, the only two songs I don't like by this band (barring the debut) are Get It Faster and Gotta Be Somebody's Blues
