static prevails is $15 while we're at it the three re-presses broke my bank account a few summers ago haha. they're fantastic though
It's so good. Big Casino is a perfect single, then you have songs like Let It Happen, Carry You, Firefight, Chase This Light, and Dizzy that I just think are some of the band's best. I think it got a bad reception for a while due to the glossy production, but it seems like people have been coming around recently.
Man, I always thought their albums had glossy, near flawless production, didn't know anyone viewed Chase this Light poorly for that. I always liked it a lot, but connected with Invented and Damage a lot more. Listening to it past couple days though has given me a new appreciation for Chase this Light though. Definitely some of bands best stuff on here.
I'm not sure if this is kosher in this thread - If it's not, please feel free to delete. I've been begging my band(s) for a long time to cover Work. I finally got my current band to agree to it. It made my day.
literally no one talks about it. its not bad per se, but its just kind of a bog standard 90s punk album.
I've always understood that it's been practically disowned by the band. It would make for a good trivia question tho
I have enough time determining if I actually like Static Prevails or not. It's at least alright. I'm just very rarely in the mood to listen to it because this band obviously became something truly special from Clarity onward.
When Jim got on the mic, shit changed and they've been better since. Static is good, but they didn't find their true footing until Clarity. Not even worth digging deep into that back catalog.
I found out about the fist Jimmy Eat World album because I was looking at Static Prevails somewhere and it said "Jimmy Eat World's Sophomore release Static Prevails", and I looked it up, listened to like 30 seconds of a song off of it, and locked the memory of what it sounded like in a box that I never intend to open again. Safe to say, the band improved drastically over a few years.
I love Static Prevails. It reminds me a lot of The Menzingers with the punkier/heavier guitars and the dual vocals. I'd be surprised if Tom and Greg arent at least somewhat influenced by that record. But yeah JEW like never play anything from that first album and I've heard Jim and Tom refer to SP as their debut/first record so safe to say even the band doesnt like it.
I've always thought Static Prevails was the first official album anyway seeing as how no more CDs have been manufactured and distributed for the S/T. Maybe one of these years this band will release another S/T album to truly erase that first one?
I remember when Clarity came out. I had so many friends that were into punk music, and Static Prevails was sort of a thing then. They were stunned by Clarity. It was the first time I saw a lot of my friends seriously considering music like that. It was never the masterpiece to me that it was to a lot of the other kids I knew, but I still love that album. Futures is still my favorite A lot of people I knew wrote them off as soon as they "sold out" with Bleed American. I stuck around and I've loved pretty much everything they've released since.
You and I are exactly alike, my friend. I didn't know who they were until blink was pushing them, but I asked for BA for Christmas and was hooked. JEW basically defined my senior year of high school. Bought Clarity during that time and my friends and I played both back-to-back all year. Futures is my favorite album of all-time. Still holds up. It's never lost it's power with me. They remain a top 5 band for me.
It kills me when the Clarity purists complain about any JEW album afterwards. They try to tell me Bleed American was a cash grab. My go-to response is that they recorded that album with no label. They basically made the album they wanted before knowing if anyone would even sign them again. Trombino didn't even charge them until they could get a record deal. That album is the product of grinding in the studio with money they didn't have and working day jobs.
Anyone who thinks an album as perfect as Bleed American was a sell-out or a cash grab should never be allowed to listen to music ever again. They've forfeited that right.
As far as I'm concerned, JEW is made up of four average guys who are able to live comfortably while making terrific music. They're the quintessential rock band any of us would like to be. The fans adore them and they grind out well-crafted records that get them enough coverage/fanfare to make an honest living and not be thrown into some media blitz. It's really the ideal situation for a mainstream rock band.
