hydra head was such a good label, but profound lore kind of carried that torch. tons of great forward thinking metal to come out in recent years that isis really paved the way for baroness is so fucking great, they tackle their color themes perfectly with each record and purple might be their best yet. dave fridmann did a lot of good for their sound. bazely's art is great too he's done a bunch of covers i love for other bands like kvelertak and darkest hour and stuff
Just put on the Believe in What You Want DVD and totally forgot that the little break down thing from "Get It Faster" plays on a loop when you leave it on the extras menu. I'm so happy right now.
Might be my favorite band DVD. It's a killer 9:30 Club set from right after they put out Bleed American, some goofy tour footage, and a ton of inside the studio stuff from the recording of Bleed American. Looks like you can snag it for a penny.
Hahah, yeah, that chorus has such a perfect little tongue and cheekness to it that it just works so well for me. And man, "Always Be" is a great single. It's definitely up there with "Work" ... which I was always surprised wasn't bigger. (It has a great video as well.) I think that if I was going to try and get someone into JEW today, I may go with CTL. It's that kind of album. "Electable" is my least favorite. I sometimes skip it. The bridge/end of "Firefight" I've come around on. There's some playing around with that album's sequence that could have gotten it up to Futures level for me though, with some of the b-sides, and then playing with how it all flows. Even so, I love it. I'd move "Blues" toward the back end, put "Be Sensible" before it, and then put Open Bar in "Electable's" place if I had to come up with something I think may work. Use "Beautiful Is..." as a segue somewhere. I dunno. I should think about this more, I think you could do something pretty awesome with it all.
I've only kind of handpicked a few metal acts that I enjoy and am still kind of diving in. I'll have to check out Profound Lore. Intronaut is a band that continues to amaze me, and I hate their early thrash material (I just don't like thrash.) Shows you can never pigeonhole a band because now they're probably one of the best progressive rock bands out there right now and they've become incredibly melodic. also a big fan of Torche. They have a knack for making metal fun and not so fucking serious, but also have this dark side to them on their less popular material as well. They have an EP/Vinyl called In Return that is the rawest most gnarly record you can possibly get before sludge fades into doom haha it's pretty cool, great production on it and a lot like early Baroness.
never listened to intronaut but the name is familiar so i'll check em out torche is another one of my favorites, they've jokingly described themselves as sludge-pop which is so perfect haha they write the heaviest meatiest riffs in all major keys its crazy fun
It's funny we can be talking about metal in a Jimmy Eat World thread because Jim Adkins bleeds a les Paul through a Marshall Plexi on their heavy stuff. Plexis are the shiiiiiit
Haha yeah! He saved that inning. Glad to see Grimmer pitching well again too. Also- Heyward crushing a homer then committing his only error of the season was fucking hilarious.
HAHA that is actually awesome as fuck I mean, I definitely put on JEW when I want to scrape my ears with some rough distortion. They tend to nail it whenever they're going for that. But they always maintain enough emotional appeal to not just be overly man-proud cock rock.
Invented is the album i've come around to the most over time. loved Static to Futures right off the bat, and CTL and Damage ended up not hitting the mark the way the others did.
Cautioners is the best song on BA, and really no other track comes close. Here It Goes is their catchiest song, but many other CTL songs are up there too
Oh fuck CTL really is ten next year. It doesn't nearly feel like it's been that long, wow. Has to be my #2 after Futures.
Despite Clarity being my number one, I do agree with people who said Chase This Light is the most consistent JEW record
I never got into Chase This Light when it first came out, and I honestly have only gone back to it maaaaybe 3-5 times since then. It's been years since I've listened to it. I only liked "Electable." I should give it another shot. It just felt like such a big change from the 1-2-Punch of Clarity, Bleed American, and Futures.
Yesterday I was thinking about what you could do to make Stay on My Side Tonight a full record. I think there are some songs from the Trombino sessions and some songs from the CTL demos that would work pretty well to fill that out into the perfect missing link between the two records. I also think "Gotta Be Somebody's Blues" would have been perfect on that theoretical record. I might make an imaginary tracklist for that, because I never listen to the Futures b-sides enough.
I listened to SOMST the other day and I was not into it at all. I need to check out some of their b-sides though, especially ones from CTL.
