I always view "Invented" and "Mixtape" as both closers to that album, is that weird? I can't think of a single other album I do that for. Like in my head Invented is just as much the closer as Mixtape is which doesn't make sense. I guess it makes sense the way I look at the story of the album, but still weird
Dizzy most effectively captures a certain feeling of closure than any of their other songs. It's big and swelling but it never really lets up once it starts, it just builds and builds til that fantastic bridge and closes out on a somehow even bigger chorus. The orchestral elements in the background really brings that shit home.
I kind of view them like that too. Sort of like the last three songs on Third Eye Blind's self-titled.
I think "Dizzy" is Jim's best-ever vocal performance, so that elevates it for me too. I probably like "23" more for personal reasons, but those songs are both on the same level, no doubt.
I agree, I think of it as like a double closer type thing, which might not make any sense to anyone but me
There are a lot of albums where the penultimate track and the closer go hand in hand, I definitely see invented that way but it's not fair to include the title track when stacking closer unless you do it for all their albums which isn't really fitting for any of them but invented.
Dizzy/23 ( I haven't turned 23 yet so this may still change as of Sunday) Goodbye Sky Harbor You Were Good Mixtape My Sundown Don't feel strongly about the others to have an opinion
23 Mixtape My Sundown You Were Good Dizzy Goodbye Sky Harbor Big gap between the top three and bottom three imo
Ah, I don't even know if I could rank them. And honestly, mine changes every few months. All I could say for sure right now is Dizzy is my favorite
Dizzy 23 My Sundown You Were Good Mixtape/Goodbye Sky Harbour (would be above Mixtape if not for the length).
I don't have a problem with it. It kind of makes it a song I don't listen to much outside of the context of a full album listen, but I don't think it has to be. Whenever I listen to the album and get to that end section, I always just close my eyes and take in all the little things happening and the layers that weave their way in and out. It makes me kind of reflect on the journey the album takes me on, and it feels like the perfect way to end it. Hard to really articulate, but that's the best I can do lol. Love that song.
I'm afraid to ask, but i'm pretty sure everyone in my desk clump can hear me rocking out to 23 right now....
