There are more good Jimmy songs than there are Brand New songs, that's at least true. Cause JEW put out albums.
I also find Jimmy Eat World much easier to put on at any time. They have a lot of songs that can be attributed to different moods, while Brand New has mostly only cultivated dark, brooding moods with their music.
Brand New is more unique but I don't think they ever sat still long enough to master what they were going for at any point. As great as TDAG is it still sounds quite confused, like a band that isn't quite comfortable in their songwriting process. It's part of the appeal of the record but instead of taking that a step further they were like, nah let's make a crazy record instead and have fun with it (Daisy). Almost seems like TDAG took a lot out of them and they didn't want to make another exhausting record with all 10,000 details perfectly in place. JEW is refined, and does have those 10,000 things perfectly in place (with the help of being more successful, major labels fund super expensive producers and studios for all their records). Not as high highs imo ,aside from "Polaris" which is probably the best thing either band has done. I get a bigger emotional impact from listening to Brand New but I think Jimmy Eat World really took a sound they wanted and got extremely good at that sound.
Even 'Bleed American' was self funded. They got dropped from a label and took out loans to make it. Pretty great story.
I was going to say "On a Sunday" but then realized I could easily make a JEW pun so i'm gonna run with it. Theyre really premiering it on a Sunday?
well this kinda came from nowhere. thought i did anticipate it a few months ago when i talked to Butch Vig and he said they were finishing a new album! excited to see where they go next. hoping for less stripped down and more grandiose, Invented-like.
So excited. Did not expect new JEW until next year. So glad they didn't drag out the "stay tuned" for very long! Long live the 3 year cycle.
With all the Brand New talk in this thread I didn't believe this for a second. Then I remembered I was in the JEW thread so it's actually very likely.
That Get Right song sound terrific. Can't wait for new song and album. It's interesting how Meldal-Johnsen will influence the sound. Will it be more indie-rock or electronic kind of thing?
I don't think not doing anything is marketing. I think they just decided to use the whole mysterious schtick only recently, because everyone kept acting like they were, so they embraced it. I really honestly don't think they care if you think they are mysterious or not it are anticipating their new album or not. I think they are gonna do things their way and everyone else be damned. Sure I guess its marketing, but I don't think they are trying to terribly hard at it, at least not till recently.
Anyone heard "I Love You All The Time"? It's on Apple Music. Released in response to the November 13th attacks in Paris.
They've been behaving this way for ten years, ever since The Devil and God came out. Not everything is marketing, but what they're doing definitely is. It's like what J.J. Abrams does with his films. Like I said, they're trying terribly hard to make it look like they're not trying. Those press releases, for example, are just hilarious to me every time they come out. If you don't think it's marketing, well, that's your opinion. I'm sure Jesse and co. would prefer it if everyone thought that way, because it means what they're doing is working.
