Implying that a band shouldn't try hard in everything they do and should half ass stuff? Yeah that's kind of ridiculous
I think you're reading a bit much into it. It's not that a band should be criticized for trying hard in writing an album - frankly I don't even know what that would imply and I certainly don't have a first hand look at their writing process. I just think they found a direction for their sound that they liked on Futures, and then tried to duplicate that aesthetic on both Chase This Light and Invented, with progressively middling results. If the band themselves didn't feel that way about those two albums and the way they were received critically, I don't imagine they'd have switched gears the way they did for Damage. It doesn't make either Chase This Light or Invented bad albums - I purchased both and I'll purchase their next one too. They're just not the modern day classics that JEW is capable of.
I think when people use 'trying too hard' as a criticism, they mean that it sounds inauthentic. (I don't think JEW has ever released anything of the sort)
So you think Jimmy Eat World planned Futures based on the success of their last two albums? And then tried to find an in-between, in terms of what fans liked.
Chase This Light isn't trying to be Futures at all. Not even a little bit. And Invented is trying to be anything predicated it. Invented is a very very unique album, definitely not trying to be anything other than what it is either
theres literally no need to be condescending when we're trying to have a discussion with you and giving our thoughts @vidiviciveni
Yeah, I'm not seeing how CTL is trying to be Futures in any way. I can understand that criticism for Invented, but I still think Invented is a better album.
I wasn't meaning to come off the way that post may have, that's my bad. I made a huge post about Invented a couple pages back on why I think it's such a unique Jimmy Eat World album you could read if you like that would give clarity to my post, and a little more of my thought process behind my statement rather than me just telling you what's what i only used the word clarity instead of clarify because we're talking about JEW haha
All good. I listened to a bit of Invented this morning and while I do like Jim's writing angle on that album, often even writing from a female perspective, musically to me it is the sound of a band in a rut. Which is why I enjoyed the change of pace on Damage, and would even more so enjoy a harder pace like in the clip on their site.
invented is at least structurally kind of a throwback to clarity, albeit from a different perspective in writing
Not a huge fan of it honestly, so damn sparkly with the keys. Heard "Cut" last night though and forgot how much I liked it. Love the cover art to Invented also. Makes me curious to listen.
I think the nice thing about JEW as a band is that if you dove in fresh on any one of their albums never having heard them before, almost any album could be your favorite. I can see if someone heard Invented on a fresh palate that it would be a lot more impactful to them than to me.
It's just a standard fun poppy song, ha. I'm not that into much else on there. C&C and Movielike are cool.
