The album may "only" be 10 songs, but it's right around 40 minutes which is very standard when it comes to a full length album. Adding 5 more songs would have made this way too long, and we'd be like "a couple of these songs feel like filler" or "it kinda drags in the middle", etc. This album is well-rounded and is the perfect length. Makes us want to listen to it repeatedly, and that's perfect.
I feel like it's ok to say "I wish [Album X] was longer" but saying it "should" be longer shouldn't really be a thing, right? It's as long as the given artist wants it to be.
I do agree that adding 5 or 6 more songs would have made the album far too long, even if all of the songs are quite good. There is no doubt about that. I disagree though that adding 1 or 2 more songs right around the 3-minute mark like most of the songs on this album wouldn't have worked - to me that would have been the ideal and perfect length. I personally think 11 tracks is the ultimate Jimmy Eat World album length, which I am assuming is because of the ridiculously high esteem I hold Futures, Chase This Light & Integrity Blues in. All of that being said though, the album is 10 tracks because that is what they wanted. A nice, tight, lean album. With all 10 songs being great there is no absolutely dead weight here, and nothing that even approaches being filler. I know it is early, but the album almost feels to me like a tour through their discography so-to-speak, with different songs taking cues from and having the flavor of their various albums / eras over the years.
there is an video interview a few pages back. Kind of a song by song, and when Jim is talking about 555 he says how many songs they had recorded before working on that one, which was the last song they did for the album.
This probably isn’t quite as good as IB, but it’s more immediate and catchy and that’s what I want right now so I’ll probably listen the shit out of it.
This sounds incredibly hollow on Spotify. Then again, most things do. Can't wait to pick up the vinyl a little later.
555 is wild and brings me random similarities. The backing vocals in the verse melodically sound like they're going to turn into No Drug Like Me's chorus, while those in the chorus feel like something Sting could come up with. Such a weirdly good song.
A remixed Half Heart would have worked nicely, for both song style and length. Is it bands, labels or management making the final decision on # of tracks on the bigger labels?
Dang, went to buy the digital versions of the original Love Never / Half Heart and they're completely gone and not for sale anywhere. Wanted to compare the two versions of Love Never/add them to a CD-R for my car.
Yeah I'm hearing bits of every single album from Clarity onwards, and it stays cohesive to my surprise.
Just like BA and Futures, this album has the right amount of upbeat/sing along songs and mid-tempo/ballads and they pull it off with 10 Tracks.
Nah, my speakers at work, which are usually really good (it's an old 2.1 Harmon/Kardon set.) The Almost sounded a little hollow too, so I restarted Spotify and that seems to have helped some. Not sure what's up. No big deal, though, I don't primarily listen to anything in Spotify anyway. Just couldn't wait to hear this.
