Just heard "Sure and Certain" come on the radio while I was driving and it clicked beautifully. Now I'm excited for this album more than I was.
Yeah, I mean, I liked Magnetic a fair amount, but it wasn't because of the lyrics. The new one is just such a drag though.
It's the first album with a bunch of music that's not recognizably "the Goo Goo Dolls." Sounds like Rzeznik singing Phillip Phillips, OneRepublic, and Imagine Dragons songs. Magnetic got my hopes up, because it had so much positive, catchy energy, rather than constant attempts to rewrite "Iris," but then it turns out they were just going to get even MORE conventional, which is crazy to say about such a mainstream band.
Yeah, I really love the way this one sounds. Full, layered, and JMJ did a great job with that. But I may be bias to his production style + really wanted an album like this from the band.
ohhhh didnt know who produced this upcoming record, same guy that did paramore self titled. count me in.
Yep, that would have been my answer to that question too. They did a bunch of co-writing for the new one right? But instead of reinvigorating them, it just watered down the sound more. Really a disappointment.
They co-wrote for the first time on Let Love In and the percentage of co-written songs has increased with every album since then. It definitely correlates to the decline in quality. The bad lyrics are all on Rzeznik, though. It seems like they're the result of him sobering up from some serious alcohol issues, getting married again after a divorce, and losing all the inspiration that came from struggling with those things.
Somehow I missed a notification in both of the JEW threads like a week ago and thus I had a lot to catch up on just now. I'm actually kind of glad I did because I got to read several exciting posts comparing songs on this new album to a lot of my favorites ("Beautiful Is" got a mention which has me really psyched). Cannot wait for this.
Holy crap, what a song Sure and Certain is. That chorus is so wonderful. Would love to know why there's so many dislikes on Youtube.
It could be in response to the lyric video. People have been strangely critical of them lately. I was reading through the comments, and feedback is overwhelmingly positive of the song itself. This person nailed my thoughts on JEW as a band: Some bands I love I find myself thinking "I hope the next album isn't disappointing". With Jimmy, I just feel like "I hope they release their next masterpiece soon."
Every band releases shit lyric videos now. Would be a bizarre reason for people to put the thumbs down.
I liked the lyric video, love the whole theme and aesthetic of the album. A lot of the dislikes probably came from the dudebros that loved the band in college and don't like how the song isn't "rock" enough. Same type of people that boo at a Brand New concert when they don't play songs from Your Favorite Weapon.
feel like they're doing a fantastic job marketing this album. i see updates on facebook daily, ads on youtube and other places, it's just been great.
On the topic of dudebros, I have a friend who anytime I'm playing JEW, will switch the song to Pain. It's the only one he'll play. hahaha
With Integrity Blues on the way, the thought of Brand New making new music has been a complete afterthought. Plus, with all the other good music set to release in the next month or so, it's very easy to forget about.
