It's impossible to be objective. No reviews are objective. I don't understand the problem of checking something out because you're curious about it, not liking it, then sharing your thoughts on it. You would never suggest someone not review something that they know they'll like going in would you? Whys it different when it's something someone dislikes? And how do you know he disliked it before he heard it? Maybe he hasn't liked the band in the past but wanted to give it a shot and turned out he didn't like it. Why should he not review it? I hate that guys reviews as much as anyone but I would never question his right to review whatever he wants
Oh, he has a right to review whatever he wants, just like I have a right to say his videos are pointless, lack any insight whatsoever, and are done just to troll fans of whatever artist he's trashing. Which was the entire reason he sent out that tweet. Which is what prompted my original comment. Also, the situation you're describing in your comment, where you "don't understand the problem of checking something out because you're curious about it, not liking it, then sharing your thoughts on it" is exactly what he isn't doing. Which, again, is why I said what I said.
i mean i agree to some extent but i completely disagree that hes just trolling fans of artists hes trashing. people not liking things isnt trolling. and like i said id rather a reviewer actually have some range in their reviews than just praise every single thing that comes their way. but i do think his videos are terrible and hes a terrible reviewer in general.
Again, never said all critics should just "praise everything single thing that comes their way." My position is, was, and always will be that if you are going to review something, you should do so with an open mind. He doesn't do that with certain genres, and so I called him out on it.
so i thought the tweet was an actual review and i hate his reviews so obviously i didnt hit play but i did just now and yeah this is why people hate him i get what youre saying
After spending more time with the album, I'm finishing up with the podcast now, and I agree that Through does feel a little out of place. Really good song, but I think it breaks up the feeling You Are Free and The End Is Beautiful are going for before Integrity Blues and Pol Roger continue that feeling. It's a really good song though and has a massive hook, but it may have fit a bit better had it gone after Get Right and then have You Are Free follow it
wait theres an opinion that through is out of place? wild. its perfect. breaks up the slow moving tracks on the back half perfectly.
I feel like it's one of those things where, if it wasn't there, I'd probably feel like the end would go too slow. I dunno, it really doesn't bother me much at all. Just a small complaint on an amazing album.
The back half of this album makes me feel like I am surrounded by love. It's had a profound effect on me
Quantity over quality is what made that guy's career. Having a "take" on as many things as possible. It sucks, but it's his schtick. Whatever. His views on anything involving this scene of music hold pretty much zero weight for me.
I probably would never play the title track by itself but other than that the back half of this album is perfect. It flows perfectly and I wouldn't change a single thing.
I think "Through" is perfect. As I said on the podcast, I kind of look at it as the penultimate track, with the last two working almost as parts one and two of a super epic closing track. I like that it kicks the album up a notch right before the end. I think it adds some extra urgency to the back half, after a few songs that have more of a tone of resignation.
I think "Through" is perfect where it is. I also disagree with it needing an "extra chorus" or whatever was being discussed earlier. I think the arrangement works perfectly fine.. it's concise, catchy, and strong just the way it is.
this thing just keeps on getting better and better huh also i really like "Through" and it's placement. It's classic JEW sequencing. See "Nothingwrong", "Auction Needs An Audience", "The Authority Song", and "Blister" (though, I'm not a fan of ANAA tho)
Its amazing how active this thread is. Earlier this year, back between March-June, I remember it just being a few of us in the JEW thread and I remember going full detective mode on finding out about the album. The butch vig interview in which he says he saw Jim but it was quick since Jim said they had to finish the album by the end of the month (May), and the reddit guy who said he had info on an upcoming album. So awesome how fast things came together starting back in August.
I really like Through, but the chorus reminds me of another song that I can't put my finger on. Maybe I'm imagining it who knows. I prefer the acoustic version of Integrity Blues, the album version is amazing, but I'm a sucker for a stripped down acoustic version of a song.
i always lurk JEW threads i just always had nothing to say ): but now i do and what i have to say friends is that this album kicks ass
Anyone here cover any of these songs yet? I did a quick and dirty vocal cover of "You Are Free." I've been away all weekend at a wedding but I'm excited to pick up my guitar, too.
