Every time I finish a full album run-through I leave with a different part stick in my head. To me, that alone is the mark of a great record.
I'm about three listens in, and I'm nowhere close to unpacking everything great about this record. It's going to be a really rewarding album as time goes on.
weakest track for me right now is "you are free" and i fucking love that song. this album keeps getting better.
song that has grown on me most since first listen: pretty grids. i loved the verses and bridge from the start, but found the chorus underwhelming. now it's always stuck in my head.
Touchy. Anyway, I wish I liked this, but it feels uninspired to me, and I feel like their last two records really didn't do a whole lot for me either (Although the last one was better than Invented). I hope this rapidly grows on me though.
I've only listened twice so far but huge standouts are It Matters, Pass The Baby and Integrity Blues. I do like the whole thing though. I haven't really seen anyone say this but a handful of these songs really sound like a fleshed out Damage song imo
Really solid album. I'm not as in love with it as most here seem to be, especially in the context of how ridiculously good 2016 has been for music, but it's definitely their best since CTL. The back half is especially strong.
Uninspired? That's....an interesting criticism that I for the life of me can't wrap my head around. They're actively trying new things, what's not inspired about this?
Oh man, 2016 has been such an embarrassment of riches. Just off the top of my head (in no particular order): Radiohead Bon Iver Beyonce Kanye West Kevin Morby Danny Brown Mitski Sturgill Simpson Kendrick Lamar Car Seat Headrest David Bowie Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Leonard Cohen Lydia Loveless Drive-By Truckers Chance the Rapper Frank Ocean Okkervil River James Blake Death Grips Anohni Shearwater Frightened Rabbit Solange Anderson Paak Brian Fallon Pinegrove and of course JEW
Had such a good time last night. Listened to Integrity Blues 3 times in a row, then Futures, which is tied with TDAG for my favorite record in the world, listened to the Encore episode on IB, then watched the acoustic livestream, and listened to IB once more before bed. This band has a knack for becoming my lifestyle every now and then.
What specifically did you find uninspired about it? Genuinely curious, here. Did you dislike the lyrics/themes/melodies/production?
I dislike the trend I see in reviews and even discussions where people say things like that and don't expand on them
