This is how I feel as well. I love the horns, love the strings, loves Jim's lyrics, but together they just haven't done much for me. I'm actually fully expecting that to change soon.
You people are so much classier than me - I literally had no idea what 'Pol Roger' was. I just kinda assumed it was a person.
I've only listened a little over 1 time (got to "You Are Free" on a drive yesterday, and started back with "Pass the Baby" through "Pol Roger" on the way home), but that was a relatively quiet listen with my kids sleeping in the back seat. About to put on my headphones and give it a proper listen now.
Per usual, I'm late to the conversation because I didn't get the leak. Does the riff at the end of Pass the Baby remind anyone else a little bit of RATM's Freedom?
I don't know if I find the transition seamless from PTB to Get Right. They work well together, but the jarring stop of the former and the jarring start of the latter is interesting.
Well this one is gonna need to sit. Not sure if it's gonna turn out like Invented or Chase This Light.
anxious to start listening in a few minutes. hoping it's much, much better than the last two releases and hoping for a closer that's actually good (unlike the last two as well).
You hadn't listened before? I wish I could've heard that sing for the first time when I hit play on the album. It's sooooo good.
Man I feel like I couldn't possibly have been more prepared for Pass The Baby, and it still completely knocked me on my ass. What a song.
No! I chose to abstain from listening so I could experience it as part of the full record. I only listened to Get Right and Sure & Certain a couple times each. I'm so glad I made that decision, hearing it as the proper opener was so impactful.
Preliminary rankings after 5 listens - 1. It Matters 2. The End Is Beautiful 3. Through 4. Pretty Grids 5. Pass the Baby 6. You with Me 7. Sure and Certain 8. Integrity Blues 9. Pol Roger 10. You Are Free 11. Get Right This will change wildly for sure with time, but even the songs I like least here are top tier JEW songs
I'm not a fan of ranking after just the first couple listens but so far the standouts are definitely Pol Roger, Integrity Blues, You With Me, and the End is Beautiful. Pretty Grids, Pass the Baby, and Sure and Certain I fully expect to grow on me a lot. It Matters and You Are Free are not good.
After my first listen I can say I really enjoyed it, but I definitely need to listen to it at least ten more times
