Secretly Canadian Jens Lekman Premieres New Track, “Evening Prayer,” And Announces “Jens Will Loop You Now” Contest
Hard for me to not love anything Jens does right off the bat, but not connecting with this nearly as much on the first few listens as I have any of his other stuff. There's some great stuff on here, though. More than anything it just makes me want to put on WISIWTBYD or Night Falls, which is a bummer.
This album is weird (in a good way). It reminds me of something my dad plays around the house every now and then, but I don't know what it is. This is much better than whatever he is listening to, though.
Listened to this last night for the first time and immediately had to check out Night Falls over Kortedala. Both are pretty incredible and I'm not sure how I haven't listened to him before. I think I prefer this album over Kortedala tbh. Wedding in Finistére is absolutely incredible.
Listened to this for the first time yesterday also, and it blew me away. Same with Night Falls over Kortedala Dude has a way with simple almost-whimsical lyrics. "Our First Fight" is beautiful in that way There's something about this guy that reminds me of Brian Wilson's songwriting...
He really has a way with melody (for example, the piano riff to "Become Someone Else's" is an all time classic), but I don't find his voice complements his music that well. It's almost like I listen to him sing in spite of him singing. Some real catchy tunes on this album though. It's hard to dislike his output.
Very surprised that this did very little for me. I really liked his last one, but the quirky lyrics aren't connecting with me the same way on this and the melodies are a little repetitive. "How Can I Tell Him" is the exception though, which really works for me.
Top 5 album of the year for me. "Hotwire The Ferris Wheel" has become my favorite song. It swoons so well.
