RIP. Grace is one of my favorite things in the whole world.

You And I collection of recordings is out March 11. His cover of the Smiths' "I Know It's Over" is incredible

His covers introduced a LOT of people to Nina Simone and Leonard Cohen. Even if that was his only contribution to culture, it would be massive

Anyone listened to You and I yet? Haven't gotten around to it, but I'm interested.

  4. I just did last night, I think it's a nice relic with some especially great covers (I Know It's Over and Just Like a Woman). It's really really bare which I think is cool

Cool. Yeah, you don't need much to make him sound magical.

That's my highlight of the whole thing - I got chills listening to him talk about where the song came/was coming from.

Grace will always be one of my favourite albums ever.

Confession time: I've only listened to Grace, and am just starting to check out his posthumous stuff for the first time. I'm usually pretty iffy on digging too deep into demos and unfinished material that is probably only seeing the light of day because the artist passed, but I love Grace too damn much to not dig deeper at this point. Is Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk probably the best of the posthumous stuff that's been released?

Yeah, there's a load of live stuff and some interesting recordings of the demo stage of Grace but the first disk of Sketches is the closest you'll get to a second Jeff Buckley album. It's more simple and basic than Grace, more under-produced, a bit more pop I guess but it's really good. Opened Once might actually be my favourite Jeff Buckley song.

Man, "Everybody Here Wants You" is really beautiful, and the other songs I checked so far were great, "Opened Once" included. I'm definitely listening to the album later.

There's so much good stuff on there, it's kind of difficult to understand why he wasn't happy with it, although you can tell it's still not quite finished. I haven't listened to it in ages actually - I think I'll be spinning it later as well!

It also has some of the best lyrics he ever wrote. The last line of Opened Once ("I am a railroad track abandoned, with the sunset forgetting I ever happened" ) was a lyric I clung onto when I was like 15/16.

Yeah, his lyrics are really poetic... I think he's underrated as a lyricist honestly.

Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk is fantastic. Really glad I'm finally listening.

I thought Tim Buckley was mostly remembered today as Jeff's father, but I guess he also has great albums? Where should I start with him?

Been listening to Grace a lot in the last week... what a talent gone far too soon.

I bought Grace cause it was on sale and someone mentioned it in the 90s indie thread way back and I decided to take a chance on that, along with Leonard Cohen albums also on sale. Still haven't given it a listen in the last few months, but it's become top priority as I've become familiar with his story. Really bummed on behalf of his family and fanbase he died in such a freak, random way like that.

Grace is still one of my favorite albums of all time... honestly Jeff Buckley is one of my favorite singers ever, in any genre. What an incredible vocal talent, and of course great songwriting too.

So few current singers remind me of Jeff at all, but the Nothing But Thieves singer is someone who has some vocal resemblance while still doing his own thing. Matt Corby is a great Australian singer-songwriter with a phenomenal voice which at times gives me Buckley vibes, he’s not on Jeff’s level but still one of the few modern comparison points I have.

  21. Jeff's passing devastates me to this day. He was one of a kind and a massive talent. If anyone is interested in any of the many various bootlegs of Jeff's work and/or shows, please let me know. Happy to spread the joy wherever I can.

There's a lot of interesting history between these two. Him covering her, their tryst, her numerous songs about him that followed... there's a connection there I only found out after being a fan of them individually for years.

  24. There's also a book of his personal writings coming out in October:
The journals, notebooks, musings, and early song drafts of Jeff Buckley, the late singer best-known for the definitive version of "Hallelujah" and his classic album Grace, including dozens of evocative photos of his personal effects and ephemera.
