Yeah, listened to that Ill Considered album last night and McCraven this morning; both are AOTY list material.
Been trying to catch up/relisten to 2021 jazz this week. BLG, Emma-Jean, and Makaya are probably topping my list right now. FLY or DIE LIVE is also fucking awesome. Black to the Future and Julian Lage up there as well, excited to see him at LPR. Jeff Parker coming in December too? Great year, and I still need to hear the Angel Bat Dawid, Jamael Dean, and a few more.
pretty dumb when it comes to this genre but I stumbled on Christian scott today and good god, this guy rules
Just listening to the new Jeff Parker - hadn't looked at the tracklisting before so only just noticed there's a cover of Ugly Beauty on here. Nice.
Been catching up with John Dwyer's jazz albums today. Only listened to Witch Egg and Endless Garbage, but both are excellent and can't wait to dig into his more recent two.
Idk if this is your intro to Shabaka Hutchins or not, but he’s extremely prolific and has several great albums across multiple projects. The previous Sons of Kemet is probably my favorite, but his work with The Comet is Coming and Shabaka & The Ancestors is also top notch. Theon Cross also has two solo albums that are worth checking out.
also really enjoying the blake mills/pino palladino album. not at all what i expected from those two names.
the jazz albums on my EOTY list are Pino + Blake Mills (29), Ryley Walker (not so much jazz as "jazzy;" 25), Jimmy Montague (same as Ryley, kind of in the Steely Dan "jazzy" mold, 15), Sons of Kemet (9) and Pharoah Sanders (4)
Mine is something like this I think. Feel pretty solid about the top 5, after that they become somewhat interchangeable. 1. Ben LaMar Gay - Open Arms To Open Us 2. Emma Jean Thackeray - Yellow 3. Jeff Parker - Forfolks 4. Floating Points & Pharaoh Sanders - Promises 5. Irreversible Entanglements - Open the Gates 6. Amaro Freitas - Sankofa 7. Julian Lage - Squint 8. Muriel Grossman - Union 9. Wau Wau Collectif - Yaral Sa Doom 10. John Carrol Kirby - Septet Sons of Kemet - Black To The Future Weedie Braimah - The Hands of Time Melani Charles - Y’all Don’t (Really Care About Black Women) Lady Blackbird - Black Acid Soul Cochema - Vol 2: Baca Sewa Angel Bat Dawid - Hush Harbour Mixtape Balimaya Project - Wolo So
i tried jeff parker and a few others. idk. not to be sacrilegious in this thread, but I tend to prefer the jazz that leans into either the rock or the world music realms
1. Emma-Jean Thackray - Yellow 2. Błoto - Kwasy i Zasady 3. Makaya McCraven - Deciphering The Message 4. Soccer96 - Dopamine 5. Tommaso Cappellato - Pioneered 6. Ben Lamar Gay - Open Arms to Open Us 7. Sons of Kemet - Black To The Future 8. Jamire Williams - But Only After You Have Suffered 9. kiefer - when there's love around 10. Theon Cross - Intra-I 11. BADBADNOTGOOD - Talk Memory 12. Nala Sinephro - Space 1.8 Yeah, mine is pretty much the same.
I don't think I like it as much as his previous couple of albums but the new Jeff Parker really grew on me around the third and fourth listen.
