Was assembling a 1920s playlist for a party and came to realize I really love Fletcher Henderson's band. I guess not surprising once you realize who was IN that band.
I had that problem with Khruangbin. They don't quite belong here but there is nowhere else on the site to talk about them so I think they deserve their own thread.
I was thinking of starting a thread on all things Psychedelia. Soul, rock, funk, indie etc. Was looking for somewhere to talk Zappa and Beefheart
Honestly perpetually surprised that I like The Shape of Jazz to Come considering I pretty much hate Out to Lunch and Ascension.
Dropping in to say I love Weather Report. Not always in that mood, but when I'm in those dudes really hit it for me.
Jaco did so much stuff and all of it rules There's also a bootleg AUD tape of Jaco and Bob Weir sitting in with Brian Melvin's band Night Food in 86. I should upload that on youtube. Tape might be too low quality for a lot of people but I love it
Oh yeah, that shit rules. Fits right in with the early fusion stuff I mentioned earlier even though its later.
I know this is probably not going to win me any cred, but I've been all about George Benson's Weekend in L.A.
Another "Lost" Coltrane album. John Coltrane’s 1964 Album Blue World Gets First Ever Release | Pitchfork
Also a good read on Bill Evans, who would have been 90 today. My all time favorite. Opinion | Bill Evans’s Influential Interplay
So that GQ Jazz albums list is bad (but not as bad as the awful jazz-fan gatekeeping comments I've seen in response to it), but it did introduce me to Clifford Brown with Strings, which is goddamn wonderful. Man, what could he have accomplished if he had lived?
Gorgeous. I actually listened out of spite at seeing some music writer whine that "He put a STRINGS album in the top 10!?! Disgusting" or something to that end. And also because I love the couple albums I've heard Brown on.
There are so many snobby jazz writers/purest out there its insane. Learned it the hard from being in a fairly competitive Jazz band in high school. Jazz kids are the WORST.
Yeah it certainly seems that way. I think so far, Third Stream might be one of my favorite subsets of jazz. Porgy and Bess, Focus, Sketches of Spain, etc., are among my favorite things I've heard.
