Pretty much mine exactly but I'd swap the last two and Weathervanes vs Reunions is a toss up depending on my mood lol
Southeastern Reunions Weathervanes Something More Than Free Foxes in the Snow Here We Rest The Nashville Sound 400 Unit Sirens of the Ditch I could see Foxes leapfrogging Something More Than Free with more time. The Nashville Sound is the one that’s lost its luster for me. I loved that album so much when it came out, but I think it suffers both from trying to “say something” about post-Trump America and from Cobb’s production, which sounds so limp and boring. Some great songs on there, but I definitely don’t reach for it much.
“Good while it lasted” is just too good. “And for a minute in the afternoon, I almost didn’t think of you. It was good while it lasted.” Pretty simple but man that packs a punch.
This is good. Haven’t paid much attention to the lyrics but it was nice to listen to while we ate dinner.
It’s so jarring to go back and forth between love songs and breakup songs. He’s still often writing in character, but the seeming lack of distance between his personal situation and the songs makes it hard to not just feel like you’re getting jerked around.
I figured I'd ask here first, would anyone want a ticket to his show in Austin this Saturday? I got so excited to go but I do not feel like making the drive this weekend, it's a free GA ticket.
There’s a few songs on this that have lodged in my brain for a while now, but particularly Good While It Lasted. What a fucking song.
What do we think the best Jason Isbell late night songs are? Trying to throw some on my daughter’s playlist for when I’m feeding her in the wee small hours. Vampires come to mind.
Definitely "Vampires." Also: Eileen Wind Behind the Rain Streetlights Only Children St. Peter's Autograph In a Razor Town Flagship Speed Trap Town The Nightswimming cover
Our boy produced the upcoming Kathleen Edwards album, and plays a blistering guitar solo on her new song:
Seems like a good idea to crosspost the new Kathleen Edwards album, which is out now, since Isbell co-produced it and plays on every song. EDIT: Isbell fans should definitely check this out. "Say Goodbye, Tell No One" is immediately one of my favorite songs of the year and Isbell plays his ass off (tastefully) throughout.
I’ll tell you what, these songs linger if you let them. Recommend giving it another late night spin if it’s been a minute.
I’ll say this: I certainly enjoy this record much more than I expected to when it was announced. A couple songs on here that are really good, another 2-3 songs that are really really good even with some glaring flaws, 3-4 that are solid without blowing me away, 2 that I do not like at all…and then there’s Ride to Robert’s which is one of my favorite songs he’s ever written. I’d say that’s a pretty good average even if the album as a whole falls towards the bottom of his discography for me.
I got into a vibe of listening to Foxes in the Snow every evening for like a month this spring, and it really clicked for me in a different way than it had on initial listens. I haven't spent much time with this album over the summer, but I think I'll bring it back into rotation this fall. This and the Ken Yates album feel like top-notch autumnal evening records.
