He did get a replica made and I think he plays the replica live at like fests and stuff. But he definitely plays the real deal live and in studio sometimes as well

Love it. One of my all time favorites (shocker I’m sure)

A few months after I moved to St. Louis I saw Jay at a grocery store down in south city. I don’t really approach people like that in public but on this particular day I just happened to be wearing a Wilco shirt SO that made it an even easier decision.

If you like SV/UT Jay’s book is really good. Collection of several dozen vignettes that are all just a few pages, can read it in an afternoon. He never mentions Tweedy’s name lol just calls him “the bass player”

I hear way more Van Morrison and Allman Brothers Band in "Middle of the Morning".

I do like this album a lot for the most part but "save the world" was an instant delete

I will admit that I have liked “Save the World” less the more that I’ve listened to it. The verses are great but the refrain really doesn’t do much for me and gets a little tiresome. Not a “delete” tho lol

  15. Listening to this right now and loving the songwriting, but am I crazy or does this sound really off? I think it's something with the drums, they sound kind of crunchy and delayed in an off-putting way.... or maybe it's something else. Finding it difficult to put my finger on it, it might be the master. Just wondering if anyone is hearing what I'm hearing.

I’m hearing what you’re hearing but to me it sounds awesome. The record is definitely more bottom heavy than his past ones, and there are several songs where Chad and Jimbo are just a touch behind the beat in a way that really makes it rock imo, kinda like peak Shonna-era Truckers

This is great and could easily be my 2nd favorite - but I’m amazed anyone thinks it’s on par with Southeastern

  18. I'll listen with that in mind! Thanks for confirming that there is something going on and it's not just my tired ears

  19. it may be better

yeah southeastern is, at best if we're removing this one since it's so soon, third for me

Yeah, no way it's better than Southeastern for me. I like this album a lot, but there are probably 5-6 songs on Southeastern that I think are a cut above anything on Weathervanes. No chance it's outranking Reunions for me either, honestly, but third place ain't bad!

I've made peace with the fact that he'll never make a record I like more than Southeastern though, so I'm not mad about any of this.

yeah it’s just different strokes. the acoustic side of jason never clicks for me really so SE always takes a backseat. he’s better with a full band, the 400 unit rocks

The 400 Unit does rock! This album is probably sonically my favorite thing he's done. I especially love the vibe and sound of the last two tracks. I just think the songwriting on Southeastern is stronger. Lyrically and melodically a richer album for me.

It’s only one song out of 12 for sure, but part of the problem in toppling Southeastern is that Cover Me Up is simply untoppable. And for me Flying Over Water is top tier too. Oh, and then the rest of the album is awesome too.

Regardless Weathervanes is very good and I look forward to really getting to know it. Isbell can do no wrong.

I just played Southeastern last night for the first time in a while, and I had forgotten how much I love "Songs That She Sang In The Shower".

"Cover Me Up" is my favorite song on the album and is on my short list for favorite songs of all time, and I always think about "Elephant" when recommending Jason isbell to someone and making the argument that he is an amazing songwriter, but I think "Songs That She Sang In The Shower" is the second most enjoyable song on the album for me. It is such a great song, and the imagery and what he is singing about honestly makes me laugh every time while also kicking me in the heart.

The other 9 songs on Southeastern that I didn't mention are all also incredible too.
