Dreamsicle is quite nice! my local record store already pre- sold out of the orange vinyl, they are trying to get more though, wish me luck
Dreamsicle is another great one. And “Only Children” is already a top-tier, classic haunting Isbell song. First two singles didn’t do much for me but the verses of both still have some great lines. At risk of making a pretentious comparison, listening to Isbell has become something like reading a Faulkner book or watching a PTA movie — even when there are songs or artists I connect to more, his lyrics just make me go “oh yeah, this is a master of the craft right here.” No one today is on his level.
Also it’s cool that Hyden gave some love to the “JI&the 400 Unit” album — I agree that it’s super under-rated. “Streetlights”, “Cigarettes & Wine”, “The Blue”, “Sunstroke”, “Seven-Mile Island”, “The Last Song I Will Write” all get a lot of plays from me.
Cool list. Might do a playlist or something as well, but until we get the studio version of "Overseas" it might be incomplete
I’m sure it will need an update after the record comes out. I’m not sure I’ve done a favorites list for him since before Something More Than Free, though.
I think of the 4 songs already released, “Only Children” is still my favorite, but “Dreamsicle” is also great. I don’t love the other two, but I still think the album will be great on the whole. I’d have a hard time ranking Jason’s songs but it’d be fun to just put together a playlist of some favorites.
Spent a couple minutes just now putting this together. Not in any particular order or ranking. I found it very difficult to narrow Southeastern down to just a few songs, so there’s 8, but then again, it is my favorite Jason album and one of my favorites of all time. I haven’t spent as much time with his pre-Southeastern music, which I intend to rectify. But I’ve given them enough listens to hone in on a couple favorites from each. Idk if I can think of a recent artist who has as strong of a top 10 to 15 songs as Isbell. I’d put his 10 best up against just about anybody.

Okay here goes. Didn't include "Dreamsicle" yet but I think it's top-30 material for sure. Honorable mentions include "Seven Mile Island," "In a Razor Town," "Yvette," "Life You Chose" as well as "Vampires," and yes I fully realize I will get roasted for leaving that one off. 1. I'm attempting to not listen to the songs that have been released so far more than once or twice, so I don't think I can rank them yet.
The most underrated Isbell songs are The Magician and Tour of Duty, that’s my 2 cents on the subject.
I mean...it's a fuckup in my book for sure but it's hard to stress too much when his catalog is as deep as it is
