Jaret Reddick from Bowling For Soup is on the latest episode of Jesea Lee’s podcast. He talks about how “1985” came together and why he had to change it, what Fred Durst, Corey Taylor, Aaron Lewis and David Draiman think of their nu-meta parody vid for “Girl All The Bad Guys Want,” MGK, the best pop punk song in the world and more.

Still find it hilarious that "1985" was an SR-71 on an album only available in Japan that BFS covered and thus, their version is the best known one.

    Aaaachem!

For sure. I remember importing it right when it came out, and then waiting for a Mitch solo album that never came out.

  6. Some of y'all didn't listen to the podcast :crylaugh:

    From the transcript:
So essentially they (SR-71) had released it in Japan and then they broke up. There was no digital, you know, there was no reason that it would ever come out here. We had just finished making “A Hangover You Don't Deserve.” First single was going to be “Almost,” we were done. At the same time, Mitch from SR-71 was shopping for managers. He was shopping for labels, just trying to figure out what his next move was and our manager heard it goes, man, that doesn't sound like an SR 71 song that sounds like a bowling for soup song. And so I heard it and I was just like, man, I don't know. It's pretty, it's pretty abrasive. There's like the line, like “never knew George was gay.” Cause SR 71 was really in your face. So anyway, we gave it another listen that night and I don't know, man, if they're telling us the label likes it or whatever. So I was just like, listen, I just want to be able to change the lyrics and make it more what I would do. Just more subtle, you know, like I say “get a hand on a member of Duran Duran” And I mean obviously their penis but like it doesn't come across as blatant. It's like that's a little hidden gem., but lyrically I made some changes that the bridge is different and the intro is different with it, but you know, we consider it a collaboration and a co-write because my version is different from theirs. You know, it's funny, people... And this doesn't bug me in any way, it's just weird. Like, people sort of hold it against the song. Like, oh, but that's a SR 71 song or whatever, you know? It's like, okay. I mean, I never hid behind that. Mitch is in the video, you know? Mitch Allen walks across the thing and looks at us and goes like this in 1985 like it was never a secret. So when people discover it they're just like oh their biggest hits a cover. But again look there's a double platinum plaque right there and guess what they say on them? Bowling for Soup. Again, it doesn't bug me. It just is, I don't really know why people want to use that to try and bring us down because it's not an issue.

"SR-71 was really in your face" is a funny comment for many reason. If you were ever one of those people that got duped into buying SR-71's debut there are a grand total of TWO pop-punkish songs (Right Now and Politically Correct). The rest of it was this mid-tempo boring adult contemporary and the two singles were clearly a result of a label investing in a band and then realizing there was no single thus bringing in hired guns (Butch Walker) to write them a hit.

Truly one of my biggest purchase regrets as a young man. Just a barnburner of an opener with PC AND “Right Now” and then an album of mush, all for $19.99 at Sam Goody.

I think I downloaded Napster the next day.

If I recall correctly, that CD was one of the $8.99 promos at Best Buy. Truly an all-timer of the Best Buy loss leader CD's (up there with Sum 41's AKNF)

Listened to this episode last night and heard Jaret mention they may be coming to Canada in March. Please please please let that be true. These guys are a bucket list band from my teen years, and they’ve played here 3 times ever, with the last time being in 2005
