She's doing this production trick where she blends her vocals into elements of the backing music and it's incredibly effective and ethereal. I know I'm not describing it well but whatever I'll get there eventually. Also: I randomly listened to the Post Malone album today right after Japanese Brekkie and they're a lot more alike than you'd think.
Good to know we have the same favourite track! Japanese Breakfast Explains 'Soft Sounds From Another Planet,' Track By Track
After turning off both Mura Masa and Sheer Mag, I was worried nothing was going to stick with me tonight. This quickly proved otherwise. Real solid record. Whatever 70s/future sonic hybrid Zaunier stumbled onto here just works. She's quieter than ever vocally (doubly surprising given the subject matter from records 1 to 2), yet somehow she's never sounded more confident. What else...um....rockin' fuckin' bass work in just about every track (the opener especially), not to mention that I love the haze this entire record sits in production-wise. Oh, and the influence gamut on this thing! Hearing Fleetwood, Polica, Spiritualized and Britney Spears all emulated within minutes of one another puts the biggest smile on my face.
"Boyish" probz favorite track. Gives off this jangly Mothers-esque vibe, then goes full AM radio and heads to the heavens for the chorus. Some real chances taken and they all pay off
Did you listen to Katie Ellen, Waxahatchee, or Us and Us Only? Last week was stacked and along with this those as essential releases.
Man I thought this came out yesterday not a week ago. I've been sleeping on it. So good. Not as immediately impactful as Psychopomp was on me but damn this is good.
How many on this are old songs? Road Head, Boyish, Jimmy Fallon Big. Anything else? The start of Road Head reminds me of 10 Mile Stereo
