Yep. EP is awesome. Band is done though. Drummer has been drumming for my ex-roommate's band Stippling. They have a record out and maybe another one soon.
I thought this went up for pre-order forever ago? I definitely remember snagging one plus a rolling tray when I read the money was going to RAINN.
is it all proceeds or just a portion? this is still weird that it's even happening. wish we could forget this band existed tbh
Had to do a lot of digging through their website to even find the record but "All proceeds will be donated to RAINN and RestorativeJustice.org" is what it says on the pre-order page. Definitely super weird
I assume they just had them lying around and decided to try and do something decent with them. At least something good benefits
i know Pirates Press record of the week JUST posted them like a month ago which doesn't usually happen unless they just sent them out. and it's been like a year. idk, it's weird. hope matt gets nothing from this (though ruben deserves it)
I think some money going to a quality cause like rainn is worth the discomfort of remembering the band exists for two seconds, imo
it's a weird dissonance though. basically this means that they're selling this music made by an abuser who was very outspoken about safe spaces in general, almost a mini pwr bttm situation here. that means that some people are totally comfortable with that, which is weird to me in the first place. honestly i'd rather this just not exist and these records were never made and a donation was made instead with the money that would have gone to these records, but whatever.
I think there's enough people like me that can dissociate the artist from the music. those people will then buy the record, Creep will sell all the records, and a bigger donation can be made. Seems pretty clean cut to me.
I don't think this was anything like the PWR BTTM stuff. Unless I'm missing something else that happened. I read that two drunk people had sex and that both of them regretted it the next day. Unfortunate situation but, unless I'm missing a lot of details, I don't see it as some career ending abuse allegation. I understand if people don't want to go over shit again. But I read the statement they put out, that I felt didn't really attempt to sugar coat what happened, and never saw anything contradicting it. Literally couldn't think of a better way to handle the situation.
the fact that ruben left the band and that they exploded the way they did and matt isn't welcome around in the community makes it feel like we don't know the whole story. plus when the victim said they didn't want the story posted and it was deleted...i just feel weird about a lot of stuff here
I mean if there is a rumor going around that you did something bad, I feel like you have every right to address it before it gets out of control. Obviously somebody was spreading this around as a rumor. I never heard what the rumors were in comparison to what Matt said happened but you know how rumors get when left unchecked. Ruben probably left because the band had no future. Call out culture is both an important part of making our scene safe and a tool used by some in the scene to gain credit as the most "woke". What I read made this seem like a bad experience that someone could learn from. Instead it gets treated the same as the pwr bttm shit that was really serious and repeated. But band like turnover have members that repeatedly emotionally abuse people and steal shit from opening bands get a pass. Sorry for their rant.
I think the outcome makes this completely distinct from the Pwr bttm situation. The statement this band made didn't even pretend like they were gonna go on iirc, and the person in question deliberately removed themselves from the scene. I'm only touching on the end result bc I'm not gonna compare how ""bad"" each transgression was; they're both shitty and that's not productive.
ruben holds a whole lot of respect in the scene and i feel that if the situation really wasn't bad, things would have been straightened out. i still can't imagine it happening as it did if it wasn't as serious as i imagine it was. but i don't know, i'm only making assumptions here.
My receipt for this is from march 3rd, they definitely didn't have these lying around and instead decided to do a pressing post everything. While the only reason I was comfortable with ordering was that all proceeds are being donated, I sort of agree with everyone that is uneasy to jump to quick judgement of the situation as I personally know of a few similar situations where the two parties really worked it out and it turned out to be a mistake instead of a purposefully harmful act. I don't think I'd support the band in the future unless there was clear indication that the situation was properly handled, but I also don't think that the information we know is enough for me to purge them out of my library like I did PWR BTTM.
Yeah, idk, I'm as over this band as anyone but comparing their situation (or any situation less than repeated sexual assault and cover-up) to PWR BTTM seems...disingenuous to me, I guess. Distinctions and context are important. I would also imagine it's difficult for a small operation like Creep Records to front the same size of donation they are here without selling anything (especially considering JANK was becoming a large meal ticket), so while I agree that it's all a bit strange happening now, I'm happy with the organizations that are going to be able to benefit from this. Just my two cents.
I heard from people I know who are somewhat close to the issue that it was pretty much a matter of either ruining three reputations or letting Matt catch all of it. I also read it as a "this person realizes they made a mistake and is merely addressing it" but it's lose-lose for everyone as soon as sexual assault is brought up, but I don't know anything about their situation.
My record came in today with a note saying that the rolling trays did not come out up to par so they refunded me. Amazed that creep couldn't bother to send a shipping notification or an update on the trays at all. Record looks and sounds good and the lyric sheet is a nice touch, but I don't like the updated album artwork as much.
I'm all for holding people accountable but I still feel like, if everything that's been said and recounted is to be believed, that this is a case of when the witch hunt goes wrong Everyone is calling this person a creep and his career in music is destroyed, and I'm not saying that it may not be just - but it may not be, and that worries me a little
