Janet Planet (Annie Baker, 2024)

Just watched. I’m probably gonna be in the minority on this one but man I did not like it on first watch. Bummed out because this kind of quiet dissection of parent/child relationship movie has really been hitting for me the last few years. And this one just really didn’t at all.

 

I wasn't that into it either

 

This was really impressive. The complete bewilderment of being a child.

Caught this in theaters over the summer and really loved it, glad more people are seeing it now.

Also got to talk to the AD at a wedding a few days after that, which was really cool!

 

The name and the general vibe of the promotional material made it seem like a kooky Sundance movie and I didn't think about the movie again until it started making all the year-end lists.

 

The opening scene made me think I was in for a quirky A24 dramedy but thankfully it was much more than that. Really good.
