Seen a few people saying this is his most straightforward to date, which is a little worrying because he's at his best when he's experimenting. Will give it a listen in a bit.

The song with SZA is an odd one. Some parts sound great and other parts sound like standard modern RnB, which kind of ruins it a little.

Half way through the album though and it's not sounding too bad so far. Definitely his most standard album to date, but still enjoyable.

Falls apart a bit in the back half. Too many ballads kind of spoil it a little.

Overall, i'm not sure this will get too many repeat listens. Not in full, anyway. There are 4 or 5 tracks i'll return to, though.

His output has been getting progressively more straightforward. He doesn't take that many risks anymore. And whilst I don't think he's got "shit", I can kind of understand where that guys coming from. When someone's output drifts as far away from the sound people fell in love with as JB's, it's understandable that people will have strong opinions like that.

You can't say he doesn't take risks anymore when Before came out only a year ago

Anyone who thinks he hasn't been pushing the envelope this past decade has never actually listened to The Colour in Anything

"Where's The Catch" is such a standard pop song tbh

Also TCIA was over 5 years ago. Everything he's done hasn't been bad, it's hardly a shocking take to say he's been taking less risks. You can't listen to Order/Pan or the 200 Press EP and then listen to the track with SZA on here and say he hasn't.

I'm not even a massive JB fan or anything, but I saw him on Wednesday and he puts on a hell of a show

I wouldn’t say it’s the worst shit put to tape but the rest of that thread isn’t necessarily wrong imo

I definitely agree with the premise that his music has gotten a lot more linear or straight-forward, almost to a fault

Yeah like I said earlier in the thread I like his music just fine still but it’s far from the exhilarating trip it was back in 2010-2011 when I discovered him

Idk I liked this a lot on first listen, and overall thought it was more interesting than Assume Form on first listen.
