I don't get hating something we know so little about yet. And I bet a lot more people check out the anime that wouldn't have because of this news.
There aren't any major Asian actors that can be the lead of a Hollywood film, soooo there's gonna be some white washing, fam.
i just can't imagine a live action film encapsulating any of the aspects that made this so good. the energy and pacing, the music, the visuals, i mostly just don't think it's possible
I suspect it'll be different, and not a shot-for-shot, but different can be good in a new way too. Dunno, I like comic/books and movies based on those too, and they're always different. It doesn't keep the anime from existing and watching and enjoying.
I'm not worried it'll detraft from the original at all, I'd just rather all that money be spent on something original
I think the best thing they could do is take the overall idea and adapt it from there. The same way that Predestination took the overall idea of All You Zombies and kind of filled in the blanks. If it's a straight remake, Abrams should probably not attempt to have it explore Japanese culture.
I think there can be if given the chance. I mean POC lead movies have been doing great. And it's proven to be not a great idea to white wash considering how Ghost in the Shell bombed.
I don't think J.J. Abrams is a very good filmmaker and the track record of American-produced anime adaptations is below garbage. That said J.J. Abrams is one of the best people in Hollywood at supporting talented people behind the camera and in front of it, so if he isn't the director, I would be considerably more content. Also, you make major actors by giving them big roles. There are plenty of Japanese-American actors who can handle a big science fiction movie. When people excuse studios for casting white people in non-white roles it's always because "they need a big name attached" and while yes that gets a lot of things made in Hollywood, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy because they only cast white people.
The animation of this movie was one of the most charming aspects of it. It was really beautiful, I don't think it will be the same with live action. Idk, I just don't think this movie needed to be remade at all.
Ghost In The Shell bombed because it's not that big of a property in the States compared to something like Wonder Woman. There's way more success with comic book films than anime adaptations anyway. Most directors won't gamble on some small Asian actors just to please anime fans.
one of the reasons it bombed was because of the bad PR revolving around the white washing. You said that adaptations couldn't do well unless it had a big actor/actress to lead, and Scarlett Johanson was Ghost in the shell's lead sowhatisthetruth.gif the excuse of not wanting to cast an asian actor because it won't make money is such a cop out. so many directors/studios take chances on dumb movies with bland white leads, but the idea of wanting to cast a POC is way out of the question. especially on movies with an asian environment/lore.
Listen folks. Part of the reason why these adaptions are so crappy is cause American film makers and Hollywood believe that they have to adapt a story and change it for an American (white) audience which results in dumb shit like white washing. These changes usually create an all around weaker story. They don't understand you don't have to white wash in order to adapt these stories. After all many in this thread seem to like the original on its own as a full Japanese product and my cousins in Indonesia binge watch NCIS. They don't need some dumb NCIS Indonesian adaption to understand the show.
TV is a much different breed than movies, though. You could cast an Asian actress for a Ghost In The Shell TV show, and it would do well. Hell, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has two Asian actresses in the main cast, and that show is on its fifth season. Major Hollywood films need a big name to help sell tickets. Probably one of those "bland white leads". Nobody in this thread can name one massive Hollywood film with a legit Asian actor as a lead that did $100 million or more in the box office. I guarantee you Your Name will cast Victoria Justice and Tom Holland in the lead roles.
Armie Hammer isn't a movie star and was chosen to lead The Lone Ranger and Man from U.N.C.L.E., Charlie Hunnam isn't a movie star but he was the lead in Pacific Rim and King Arthur and POC can't be movie stars until we you know let them star in movies
And when they put away the camera and the screen just shows the leftovers. brilliant transition. So many good moments in this film. Definitely felt some parts were a little dragging but the highs totally make up for it. I need to rewatch this.
