This thread has made me look at each individual season’s episodes so many times and it’s crazy the amount of times I have a least favorite and favorite just within a few. I think the “some brilliant, some good, some misses” has been going on a lot longer than most would admit. Even season 5 had the Great Recession which was absolutely infuriating when it aired followed by the Intervention which is an all-time classic.

Did you watch it live? I don’t think a show had ever annoyed me more than that when it was just a true 30 minute ad. It’s way better on rewatch with no commercials but I was so frustrated back then.

The product placement will always hold it back for me. It summed up the era of throwing in everything to the show to escape DVRs and it takes me out of it every time. Even the Coors/Closed joke got ruined when it cut to commercial and it was just everything the gang said again. And that was pure Charlie goodness.

Nah I didnt, I only got into the show maybe 2 years ago and just binged it on Netflix and then Hulu when it got dropped. I had seen a few random ones prior, but never really got into it back then

I can totally understand your opinion then. To me watching it the first time will always color my opinion of it now. Every commercial break was just Coors and Dave and Busters and then when you’d get back the gang was still sitting in one and it really sucked. Not knowing they did that there is some awesome stuff in it.

  8. For the past 6 years people say the show has gone down hill and then 3 years later are talking about the good old days of the episodes everyone hated when they came out. Heh.

I do think this season felt noticeably lower-effort than past seasons. Episodes from past seasons I didn’t like still felt like there was a lot of effort behind them. This season, episodes like The Gang Makes America Great Again almost felt completely improvised. One episode was an intentional retread of an episode they did before. And they did a clip show, which you definitely shouldn’t do if you only have a ten episode season.

What is interesting about this season is that after last years finale, there was so much speculation that Dennis wouldn't be back, and they went out of there way to confirm he would in fact be back, and it premiered 9 months later than previous seasons have to possibly make up for everyone's busy schedule, and Dennis is still only in half the episodes? Not even a complaint really, but if scheduling was such a problem why not push it even longer? I obviously have no idea what their contracts look like with FX(X) but they are pretty much the flagship series of the network so surely they could have taken more time to get everyone on the same page, no?

The more I think about the dance, I think it would've been cool/more interesting if they did 10 episodes that were a bit more poignant and depressing that all added up to that final scene with Mac. I've watched it a few times and it really is fucking amazing and cool to watch, I just don't know how I feel about it being the end of the season. I think they could've written better around it. Props to Rob and whoever that lady is though, mega talented

I definitely have no attachment to S11 overall, but in hindsight, Mac and Dennis Move to the Suburbs is an all-timer and by far one of the best they've put out in the past 5 years. I liked it a lot when it aired, but it has me in tears multiple scenes now.

Oh man I fucking love that episode. Maybe it's because my girlfriend showed me the movie "Out Cold" a few months before I saw the episode so it was great watching it poke fun at shitty old snowboarding movies like it.

I'll have to catch that sometime. To clarify, I was pretty much talking about my ass and it's just my impression of how the plotlines and such have evolved over time, haha.

The other explanation for some of the more offbeat eps of late is just that they want to keep trying new things, and I get that to a point. What seems almost undeniable is that they keep characters out sometimes to limit their filming schedule, though.

Dennis slowly losing his shit more and more with the next door neighbor and him flipping out in traffic are definite highlights

That may be my favorite episode of the past like five or six years. It’s so so so good. The entire scene when you find out Dennis heard the beeping is incredible. And seize the gap is a completely useful phrase.

so that was something else. wonder how this is going to tie in with S14... will it even, though? i'd be disappointed if they just shrugged it off.

I think they might make the “Mac is gay” storyline no longer the butt of jokes and probably Frank won’t be so obviously homophobic, but I don’t think it will change the structure of the show entirely. I doubt it will be totally ignored like we wondered about Mac’s coming out when it first happened.
