This show without full-time Dennis and multiple episodes with characters missing or only showing up for 1 scene reminds me of latter seasons of Arrested Development where it's just not the same without the whole gang all together. They can wish and hope that this method works all they want..........but it doesn't. This was BY FAR the worst season of Sunny. However the Time's Up episode was a stone cold classic. As for that final scene, the guys have talked multiple times in interviews about some of the non-PC things they have said/done over the years that they regret, and this just feels like a comment on that. That final scene was their way of apologizing and showing how they really feel about the gay community, even if they have made jokes about Gay Mac for 12 seasons. Just my take.
There were three episodes I didn't like this season. Four I loved. There are entire seasons I found to be a drag to get through. Standing by it forever.
I happy this season exists, don't get me wrong but I am on the train that it's the weakest I've seen. This is the first time I haven't thought it was consistent in all the years watching, and that isn't recent biased.
I didn’t enjoy this season as much as some others on the first watch, but I’ve said that about others before and ended up liking them in the long run. So I don’t know. I think on average, there are more episodes that are “just alright” compared to earlier seasons but that’s really the only difference to me for sure.
I thought this was a pretty good write-up on the episode. Even though the end was humorless, I thought it was a pretty powerful moment.
I think the worst season of this show is by far season 10. This season was pretty good, not really a huge fan of the dance number but it certainly was unique
There are lots of varying opinions on the strongest seasons, but one thing I feel pretty adamant about is that the effort and time that's gone into the show has steadily declined for awhile now. The plotlines and weaving together of jokes were phenomenal early on, then it first started to feel slightly different in S6... right when Rob and Kaitlin were expecting their first. I like those middle seasons (6-9? 6-10?) a lot more now than I did when they aired, but most of those eps still don't feel as painstakingly crafted -- where every single scene and snippet of dialog has a big payoff -- as earlier seasons. Then I'd say from S10 or S11 onward is where Sunny really seemed to go on the backburner for the main crew. We get a handful of great eps per season now, but can expect at least several that blatantly find reasons to minimize screen time for multiple core characters or otherwise justify simplistic writing. It is what it is.
The problem with any kind of worst season posts for this show is that each one has at least one or two perfect and iconic episodes/scenes/lines that seem criminal to be ranked with the worst. Like I can agree on ten having some really weak stuff, but it also has the Boggs episode and Charlie Work and my all-time favorite Dennis moment in the Gang Misses the Boat.
The nice thing about this show is that it can't like... ruin it's legacy the way a serialized sitcom can. Like How I Met Your Mother or what would've happened if the Office kept going type of stuff. There's not story to follow in this show, so the episodes that have been great will always be great, and if they can keep giving just a couple great ones a season, it's worth it to keep going since that will just add to the good without the bad episodes taking away from the bad. If that makes sense.
I don't really think of the show in terms of seasons, just episodes I've liked. I can jump from season to season and just watch random episodes without giving the full season any mind.
Honestly season one may be my true least favorite just because of how completely different it is in tone and who the characters are. I view it kind of like Parks and Rec or The Office, although I like their first a lot more than those.
See, I don't think the Boggs episode is all that great upon rewatching the season, and Charlie Work is alright but it doesn't compare to The Gang Hits the Slopes or Mac & Dennis Move to the Suburbs for me, or the best from 12 either. The Gang Misses the Boat is alright but I think Dennis has a million better moments in earlier seasons. At least the good thing about this show is we can all discuss it and have such different opinions on it and its cool because there's so much of it! Edit: also season one is absolutely hilarious!!
In some way, shape, or form I agree with basically all of the opinions here. In the bad seasons, there’s still usually at least one (but usually more) top tier episode. So on rewatches, certain seasons don’t seem bad as a whole - there are just some episodes you wouldn’t mind skipping. Overall, it just seems like the cast is trying their hardest to get this show out each year and it’s getting just harder for them all to give it their full commitment/attention. When they are able to, they still knock it out of the park.
I don't think it's a matter of this being recent that makes it the worst season for me. I watch reruns on Hulu regularly, it's not like I have some cloudy memory of the show being better than it was I admit this season had 2 or 3 episodes that were instant classics for me, a few pretty good ones ones, but most episodes had very few laughs from me and felt totally rushed. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either.
