Looks like Rob and Charlie wrote the finale, which is the only episode this season that any of them wrote. Hoping that means the finale is gonna be solid!

Thought the 2-parter sucked. The one with Charlie alone is instantly one of my 5 least favorites ever. Part 2 was slightly better and I love the motley crew they assembled for the road trip, but I thought all of them were badly underutilized. Just not a funny or well-written episode. Great casting of the episode but didn't let those great characters do what they do best. Even Uncle Jack was just.........there.

Yeah, wow. I liked it. Felt like the first truly new thing they've done in a while. Like it wasn't meta or self-referential. Just... completely uncharted territory for the show.

A little bummed to have another Dennis-free episode to end the season but otherwise great episode

The use of Varúð was so damn good, I still have goosebumps from just watching the ending. That was fucking beautiful and such a powerful moment for Mac. Great use of imagery with Mac’s dad being God as he watches Mac dances with the woman who’s supposed to be an angel, it’s a powerful statement. Like after all the years of Mac using religion and overt machismo to hide his sexuality, it’s a true payoff for him trying to find himself after that.

I guess I'll be the first one to say it

I didn't like that ending at all. Entirely out of character for the show. I literally said out loud "there'd better be a hell of a punchline to this" but then it went on for another like five minutes and then just sort of...ended. The rest of the episode had some laughs but just like the rest of the season, it felt like they were shooting around everyone's schedules and only Rob and Danny were really available. I was so mad when I realized they were talking about Dennis and he wasn't going to be in it AGAIN.

Besides two (arguably three) amazing episodes this is the first weak season of the show imo. I really hope they all can prioritize the show more next season, this one really didn't feel like it had much heart put into it for the most part.

Hurts so much to be so negative about this show

Still think this season was weak, but I enjoyed most of that episode.

Not to get too meta but honestly the lack of a punchline is almost the punch line. The show is so idgaf that they ended a season with a serious interpretive dance. I find that hilarious.

Yes, this season felt like the show finally showing its age. Which is remarkable, because up to this point it has remained largely free of such things. 9 and 12 are two of my favorite seasons.

Overall, this is probably the weakest season since the 1st, but it had its moments of course. The run from Time's Up to Bathroom was great, and I liked the first two episodes of the season quite a bit as well.

But the rest of the season suffered from not being funny, inconsistent or cartoonish characterizations (moreso than in the past), and a failed attempt to properly experiment with the show (likely because of scheduling restrictions).

Which is why the end of the season finale ultimately worked for me. It's new Sunny mythology, instead of repeating/referencing old jokes and episodes (see: the Boggs reboot and Dee in The Gang Gets New Wheels). And, it made me feel something. Not laughter, mind you, but when so much of the season has made me feel bored (Clip Show, Big Game) or disgusted (Charlie's Home Alone), feeling something genuine counts for me!

I haven't seen the finale yet, so this comment will be with that in mind....but I agree with all of the rest of that that. The "bad" episodes, to me, didn't feel like they were badly written or anything. They felt like the gang was basically like "Well, this was the best we could do with what we had" in regards to the availability of the cast for whatever reason. It wasn't terrible, but not as good as it could have been and still made the season feel weaker when you compare it to the last few.

Just the fact that Dennis was only in half the season was bad enough, but you also start to notice other trends that I've mentioned in this thread: a good chunk of the episodes only took place in one or two locations (some entirely in the bar, others entirely in the apartments). They also cut down the number of extras and additional characters in this season. The "Big Game" and "Boggs Reboot" episodes had some of the supporting characters just randomly thrown in, but the season was largely contained to the gang interacting with each other. A lot of the strongest episodes are when the gang is making everyone else around them miserable ("Time's Up" was this way and was the best episode of the season).

Of course, there are obvious exceptions in this season, but for the most part, you couldn't help but to feel like they tried knocking this out as quickly as they could.

I'm sure I'm not the first to say it, but I loved the risk they took with the ending. Even though Mac is a piece of shit, I think part of that can be forgiven because he's an embodiment of a closeted person trying so hard to be hyper masculine because he's so insecure with himself and his sexuality. That plays out in different ways, like the Chase Utley letter, etc.

To get to the root of his insecurity, his fear of not being accepted by his father, and make that the crux of the episode and his coming out the climax was definitely ballsy.

It definitely has a "Very Special Episode" quality to it, but I'm glad they played it sincere. I think Rob probably has regrets about the earlier seasons' broad gay and trans jokes and this was his way of showing that he wants to better represent them. I can see how it wouldn't work for everyone, but I thought it was effective.

I kept waiting for this to be part of the episode, when the cast was actually at West Hollywood pride last year
