I agree which is odd that I didn't like it at first. Makes me want to go give the others I was indifferent towards more tries.
It's weird, I'm feeling the same way now. I'll be honest, maybe I was a bit to critical on season 12. I don't know if it's because the commercial breaks were throwing me off when I was watching in the FX app before it came to Netflix, but rewatching it now is a lot more enjoyable for me, there are some really solid episodes in there.
I’ve been enjoying the past few seasons a lot more upon rewatching them for whatever reason. I think the funny parts are a little more subtle now whereas before they were front and center in addition to having a lot of subtle jokes.
I finished a few days ago but I was hungover to another level yesterday but here's the list: Season 1: Underage Drinking - National Concern Season 2: Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare Season 3: The Gang Dances Their Asses Off Season 4: The Nightman Cometh Season 5: The Gang Hits The Road Season 6: Dee Gives birth Season 7: CharDee MacDennis: The Game of Games Season 8: The Gang Gets Analysed Season 9: Mac Day Season 10: Frank Retires Season 11: Mac and Dennis Moves to Suburbs Season 12: The Gang Turns Black I tried to pick a mixture of favourites and more character based ones just to see character development and all that. I completely forgot about Charlie Work being in Season 10 though Frank Retires is
Mac and Dennis Move to the Suburbs is a top-five all-time episode of the show, so yeah it easily tops season 11 by default.
I've tried doing one per season but it's so difficult. Like, these would probably be my picks, but in almost every situation there are at least two other episodes that are just barely edged out by the one I picked. 1: Underage Drinking: A National Concern 2: Dennis & Dee Go On Welfare 3: The Gang Gets Held Hostage 4: The Nightman Cometh 5: The Great Recession 6: The Gang Buys a Boat 7: CharDee MacDennis: The Game of Games 8: Frank's Back In Business 9: The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award 10: Charlie Work 11: Mac and Dennis Move to the Suburbs 12: Hero or Hate Crime? (As of now, I'm going to go with Season 5 as the best season overall)
I've been perennially disappointed with literally every season since S6 when they air in real time (not so much lately, since my expectations are lower now). But I do find that going back and re-watching these later seasons tends to improve my opinion for exactly the reason you said. The Suburbs episode is a perfect example, actually. I liked it on first viewing, but still thought "meh, it would've been the worst episode in S2-5." After a couple more viewings I legitimately loved it, even if the style and pacing is more subdued than the early days.
Episodes like that make you think about the overall arc that the characters have had and make you really think about their psychology. It's hilarious when you really get used to what they're trying to do as opposed to, say, "The Gang Gets Quarantined" or "The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis" where you can just sit and enjoy how fucking ridiculous each character is without thinking too hard. I would say the only ones I get disappointed with nowadays are the ones that rely too heavily on callbacks. "The Gang Recycles Their Trash" was pretty neat but quickly loses its novelty on repeat viewings. By the time they got to "Frank Falls Out the Window" I was just thinking "Another retread episode?!"
I think we talked about it earlier in this thread when the news first broke after the finale aired but my favorite idea that I've come up with is that we have the first episode be Dennis trapped in the suburbs as kind of a sequel to Mac and Dennis Move to the Suburbs episode but without even Mac there, and he would start as an extremely normal person who's a good father and husband, but we see him go off on his own and scream in a pillow or something. He gets increasingly unhinged as the episode goes on until the last scene is us abruptly cutting to the bar, with Dennis casually walking in. They ask him what happened and he just off-handedly says there was a fire and asks what they're up to, then they never mention it again I have no idea if this is actually good lol but I can vividly picture this and I've typed way too much to not post it now
I instantly pictured this in my head where he does that whole stutter thing where he can't decide if he wants to even get into it. "Ahhhh yeah, it's just this whoooole...yeah...fire, thing. Ya know what, let's just move past it."
Wow, i just watched Glenn's short film "When Pigs Fly" and it was really good. Beautiful filmography.
