I love when they're first walking into the hotel room and Charlie is super casually "so I woke up halfway here and you just choked me out again huh Mac?" like he's really impressed
@Rowan5215 Are you going out of your way to find the episodes that were taken off streaming? A lot of those are essential to the series imo
yep I've been watching them all. some of the longer arcs would be super confusing without those eps lmao definitely feels like a big shift from the off. I might have been anticipating a change cos of the comments in here, but even so the move towards self-referential stuff is super noticeable. the first three eps of s8 are all sequels or heavily calling back to earlier ones, which is wild
I'm loving being here for someone going through the series for the first time and being able to reflect on my own feelings for it
Haha even though that shift is pretty noticeable, there are still a huge chunk of killer episodes moving forward that are amazing as standalone episodes. Some of my absolute favorites of the entire series are still to come. The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award & The Gang Gets Quarantined (9) The Gang Beats Boggs (10) Mac & Dennis Move to the Suburbs (11) Hero or Hate Crime? (12) The Gang Gets New Wheels (13)
Hell yeah, the great episodes certainly don't stop. I have a ton of favorites: The Gang Broke Dee (9) The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award (9) Mac Day (9) The Gang Gets Quarantined (9) Charlie Work (10) The Gang Hits the Slopes (11) The Gang Turns Black (12) The Gang Goes to a Water Park (12) Old Lady House: A Situation Comedy (12) Hero or Hate Crime? (12) PTSDee (Not one of my favs, but worth mentioning here because I think this is the closest the post-season 5 show comes to feeling like "classic" Sunny) Time's Up for the Gang (13) The Gang Gets New Wheels (13) Paddy's Has a Jumper (14)
these are the best post s8 episodes The Gang Group Dates Frank Falls Out The Window Mac and Dennis Move to the Suburbs Being Frank The Gang Goes to A Waterpark Mac Finds His Pride The Gang Texts
S4E3 America's Next Top Paddy's Billboard Model Contest S6E9 Dee Reynolds: Shaping America's Youth S8E2 The Gang Recycles Their Trash S9E9 The Gang Makes Lethal Weapon 6 S14E3 Dee Day Pretty much any episode with Martina Martinez or the Lethal Weapon ones
so yeah, finished up s8 and it was super solid. biggest complaint was that it's so damn short at 10 episodes; I'm probably not helping by bingeing but it felt like it ended right when shit was getting great. the last 3 episodes were especially amazing, I will echo all the love for The Gang Dines Out (sidenote, I think I've seen the source of every big meme based on the show now. but it's pretty damn impressive that any show could have some of it's most famous/often-referenced moments 8 seasons in) I will say it took me a bit longer to warm to this season, although almost every season of this show has finished stronger than it started imo. I think maybe they could have paced out the self-referential episodes throughout the season to balance better with the premise-based stuff, it might have worked out a bit smoother overall also seemed like Cricket, The Waitress, The McPoyles etc only showed up in the first half and the second focused way more on The Gang? no complaints, though, they just seem to get funnier as a cast every year. Glenn was particularly incredible this season; he's always been great but I feel like in any given s8 episode he was the highlight. I may have to chill out on this show for a few days, so I don't burn myself out lmao, but I can't wait to see how crazy shit gets from here
Just watched the quarantine episode for the first time and it’s easily one of my favorites of the series.
The way I think about it is that Charlie is the funniest character up through season 7 and then it becomes Dennis solely because of Glenn's virtuoso performances.
Charlie is still comfortably my favourite right now but it could be any of them in any given episode. no duds in this cast
I love how all five of them just start turning into the worst, most extreme versions of themselves as the show progress. It might be a little bit of Flanderization but they are self-aware in that regard (and even make an episode about it) so it works pretty well.
shows like Sunny (and Seinfeld before it) are kind of immune to Flanderization simply because they were always about the worst people on Earth, so making them even worse isn't a huge leap
