What if the democratically elected government was choosing to have closer ties to nazis too?

  2. i don't think that would bother the US

Maybe, but it certainly paints the decision to support one side over the other in a different light than what you're trying to paint it as lol

  4. I never implied the nazism was why the US chooses to support Ukraine over Russia

Ukraine has the right to seek NATO membership. Whether or not it is accepted is another story.

“skyrocketing energy prices” is not really true; natural gas prices in Europe have fallen by quite an amount over the last two years. Wholesale electricity prices are a bit higher than before the pandemic, but not enough to be the sole cause of the cuts VW is making. Instead, it’s more due to increasing international competition, especially from China, and the decreased profit margins with electric vehicles, which is where the market is moving towards. Plus, many of their factories aren’t geared towards making electric vehicles, so their clocks have been ticking for a while now.

When you say electricity is "a bit higher" do you mean "more than double"? Because that's what that graph shows. The price in August 2024 was 82.03 vs 36.82 in August 2019.

Still not enough to be the sole/main cause of these cuts, which that tweet infers. Plus, most electricity that Germany imports comes from France, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden. In 2022 Germany produced about 515 TWh of electricity, while importing only 45 TWh. They even exported 67 TWh that same year

Weirdly, the natural gas chart has also more than doubled from 2019 to 2024. I'm sure it's nothing. Great choice of evidence to make your case!

It’s great evidence; it was high from 2011 to 2014 and VW easily survived those times.

It's irrelevant because this is 2024 and not 2013. If margins are already getting squeezed by cheaper competition, energy prices become even more important. They easily survived 2011 - 2014 because volumes were higher and they had more pricing power.

All I'm saying is, none of the news sources I'm seeing addressing the cuts refer to the rise in natural gas or electricity prices as one of the main culprits. Of course, rising prices does not help their situation at all, but lowering prices still wouldn't turn VW's fortunes around

Volkswagen is Germany's largest private employer, and it could cut over 15,000 jobs

"Volkswagen CFO Arno Antlitz also pointed out the staggering difference in how the company wasn’t able to make as many cars to justify its factory capacity.

“We (Volkswagen Group) are the largest manufacturer with around a quarter of the market share in Europe. We are short of around 500,000 cars, the equivalent of around 2 plants,” he said earlier this month when addressing employees at the company’s headquarters, according to Reuters. “And that has nothing to do with our products or poor sales performance. The market is simply no longer there.”

Dipping into their WW2 stock. Amazing what you can learn just by looking satellite imagery

Wharf rat I find the juxtaposition of you crying "Palestinian," in the politics thread with how you only cry "escalation, " and "nazi," in this one. If I had to recklessly speculate here I would say that maybe you care a lot less about Palestinians than you lead on and you tend to just pile on whichever the opposition side of the West is at this point. I'm not saying you shouldn't but when you come in here you cry an entirely different tune and it's not the squeaky clean humanitarian one you try to lead on. Food for thought.

Re: the energy talks...i feel like all of that discussion about energy prices in Germany ignores what they did with their nuclear power plants. All time bad move.

Yeah that did not help their situation at all; those plants were a big source of stability for their grid. They’ve made big investments in wind and solar, but have also increased their uptake of natural gas and coal
