It is the fifth film in a 40 year old series, the last one was not particularly good, the writer-director team is gone, and the director is James Mangold. If you are a gambler you would not expect this to be good. Arguing with random people online makes it look worse.

yeah suggesting this will be bad because Mangold is directing it is a bizarre and pretty ridiculous statement

It’s not that he’s a bad director, it’s on top of everything else.

I guess some folks are really into Logan, but his filmography is like perfectly cromulent popcorn movies.

I have always preferred The Last Crusade to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Something about the team-up quality.

seen a number of people in my feed talk about how temple of doom is among spielberg's most aesthetically proficient films (specifcally at the beginning) and how that makes it that much more of shame that it's racist in many spots, among many other things bogging it down

also, people never should've given kate capshaw shit back then. there was nothing she could've done with that character that happened to be a massive step down from marion in raiders

Last Crusade is definitely the best. The chemistry between Ford and Connery takes it a half step above Raiders. I enjoy Temple, but it has not aged as well for the reasons @Serf mentioned.

Actors generally don't deserve the bulk of the blame for a bad performance. They didn't write the lines and they had a director telling them what to do. If an actor gives a bad performance that means the director is bad at leading people.

Ironically, the times where the actor is primarily at fault is when they are big names like Meryl Streep or Robert DeNiro. They take a lot of roles with inexperienced and unknown directors and they are allowed to do whatever they want, which has lef to so much wild overracting.

    100% agree. I am relieved he's directing.

What did James Mangold direct that is leading to all of this praise and confidence? What has he made that would compete with Spielberg's best films?

Good guy, but a bad dude

Spielberg’s last attempt at Indy made it seem like he didn’t give a shit. Mangold directed Logan, Walk the Line, Ford v. Ferrari, 3:10
To Yuma. All solid to great movies. If he can give Indy a sendoff similar to Logan I’ll be very happy

why on earth would you compare mangold to spielberg’s best when 1/2 of the four indy movies are near his worst

The last two Mangold movies I've seen took two stories I could not have cared less about (Logan & Ford v Ferrari) and made them highly entertaining and engaging. I'm confident he can deliver a solid Indy movie.

cop land, logan and ford vs. ferrari are all better than the weirdly racist and misogynistic movie.
