this one really fucking hurts for me, been listening to a lot of music he’s recorded lately coincidentally, and was eagerly awaiting the new Shellac record. honestly can’t believe he’s gone. and it’s besides the point but I did a tour of electrical audio studios a few years back and it was one of the best experiences of my life, and I had really aspired to be able to work with him some day. RIP.
Uncredited on Jawbreaker’s “24 Hour Revenge Theory” too, the credit is attributed to Fluss, Steve’s pet cat.
basically none of us would be here (on this site or any similar one or caring about the music we do) without Albini edit: shit I somehow always forget how involved he was in Jason Molinas best work too. between that and the heavy stuff, he’s influenced basically all the music I like most
My favorite Albini story is how he said yes to working with Jawbreaker but only because he thought they were actually Jawbox.
I went through a list of Albini’s discography today and I am blown away at all the stuff he did. So much stuff I forgot he did or didn’t even realize he did. Everyone knows his Nirvana and Pixies work but he did stuff for Superchunk, Silkworm, The Jesus Lizard, Bush, Chevelle, Cheap Trick… What a crazy run
Yeah, I knew that one and love that one. There’s a story I don’t recall completely about how he was mad at the mixer of that album over the snare drum sound on one of the songs. Also, I learned today that he was tapped to produce Source Codes And Tags by …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead but he had to turn it down because of his schedule. That album is amazing as it is, but it would’ve been interesting to hear how it would’ve come out with him at the helm
My favorite thing about this is how stoked Chevelle was at first and then midway through decided they weren't happy with the direction and wanted to change producers. Their label made them ride it out and apparently the remaining sessions went much better, but can you imagine? I love Chevelle, but goddamn, the stones.
I've read interviews with Steve where he was particularly proud of working with Silkworm. A criminally underrated band. Anyone who hasn't listened, please so so in honor of Steve
