Synecdoche, New York is an unfairly forgotten masterpiece.

I always thought it was the opposite, that its reputation has only grown in recent years. And like with Tree if Life, the detractors calling it pretentious have mostly faded away

I think it is appreciated more but I don't usually see it ranked up there with stuff like There Will Be Blood and Mulholland Drive.

I loved it when it came out, but it's also exhausting. Haven't had much desire to revisit it.

I’m ready for my heart to be broken again with this movie.

Synecdoche, New York is perfect. The score in particular is amazing.

It was many years ago for one. When Cage was doing anything for a buck because of his financial issues (which hasn't really changed).

And Black was doing indies as well like Bernie. Plus, people will take considerably less to be in a movie by an acclaimed writer/director. Eternal Sunshine was no different.

He wrote a draft of Chaos Walking that was discarded and also Orion and the Dark (kids book) that I don't think went anywhere. Both were safer things for him. Over the years and I'm fairly certain he admits it, he has played it safer. I think that's one of the reasons Antkind is coming out. Free reign.

He did write Hounds of Eyelids, Based on the novel IQ83 by Arthur Herzog, which is a pretty out there story but again, it went nowhere. But honestly, it sounds like it would be ideal for Netflix to pick it up now:
"The plan is for Carell to play Dr. James Healey, who led a group of scientists that conducted DNA experiments that unleashed an airborne virus that ravages the population. The affliction isn’t fatal but pretty bad; it progressively lowers the IQ of the afflicted, more effectively than a marathon of the Kardashians’ reality show. It becomes a race against time as the scientist struggles for a cure, even as he feels himself growing dumber. He watches crowds regressing into animal packs and sees the president of the United States try to comfort the masses, only to babble and drool on television."

Then there was his FX pilot...
"In the half-hour single-cam pilot that Charlie Kaufman (screenwriter of Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) shot for FX, the brilliant John Hawkes plays a TV host who loses his gig and has to move to a smaller market, where he works for a younger guy (Michael Cera) and with a new crew. Sally Hawkins played his wife, and Catherine Keener was set to guest-star. Trade website Deadline Hollywood reported that FX didn't appreciate its unusual tone and felt it "would not mesh well with the rest of the lineup." Kaufman is rumored to be shopping the show to other networks."

From that, it sounds like it’s pretty faithful to the book which has me quite worried. Hope he gets looser with the adaptation as it goes
