I just discovered this band a couple months ago but tbh I'd say the lyrics actively limit my enjoyment of their music - and I can usually stomach all manner of cheesy and over-the-top lyrics, being a prog fan. Not sure whether this record is any worse than the previous ones, but the cringe is definitely real at times.

Still need to give this one a few more listens. A few tracks have clicked with me musically, but all in all, this is just one of those bands I feel like on paper I should love more than I do in practice.

I really like most of the lyrics on Connector.

Yeah the lyrics on Connector were really good. I can't judge the lyrics on this yet as I've only heard twice, but the "told my old boss to fuck himself" line is pretty bad and I noticed a lot of use of the word "phone" lol

I’ve always been a huge fan of Brent’s lyrics. No exception here. I am really excited to dive into this a bit more, but am sick right now. Have a long drive next week though so will have plenty of time then.

lot of lines about phones on this

  6. So what's the general consensus on this record? I don't see a lot of reviews out about it and there isn't much talk here. Personally, it's my least favourite thing they've ever done. I haven't dived into the lyrics but what I did hear I didn't like much. A lot of the songs play it far too safe for me. I don't mind a softer approach but you need to bring something interesting to the table. They're much better at writing progressive post-hardcore, imo.

I've only listened three times but I like it. I think it's a step down from Connector but probably on par with what they were doing before or a bit better. There's some great songs and some not so great songs. My main problem with it honestly is that a lot of the hooks just fall flat for me and lack the energy or melody of past work.

  8. Yeah after a couple more listens I think I just really dislike "Pet Names" and "Chaos in Motion" and it kills the mood because of their placement in the record. The rest of the record ranges from okay to pretty good. Still, I don't even see this as on par with their early EPs when taken as a whole.

I’ve never listened to this band but @Jason Tate said they’re good so I’ll check it

Yeah those two are the worst part of the album for me along with "Escapism". Honestly I've only listened to the EP's a few times, I'll have to spend more time with them at some point.

I was chatting them up back in 2015 but now J Tate says they're good you'll check them out. I see how it is.

but srsly hope you like them I think they're pretty cool.

  12. Oh yeah, Escapism is a misfire too. I did like some of the guitar soloing work in that song but there are just too many cringe-inducing moments, especially the overt (and not good) Weezer worship on that song.

Listening to Connector for the first time in a while and it's even better than I remember. "Slow Dancing Forever" is still a 10 but "(No) Faith in Fate", "Andrew's Song" and "Playing Catch With .22" are all fantastic too. Honestly the only song I don't love on there is "The Hound and the Fox".

Not the sound I was expecting on this thing, didn't realize it was coming out till it popped up on spotify.

I like it, but very different sonically from what came before.

Yeah the lyrics in this are something... It'd be one thing if it was some larger narrative. Like I thought the narrative would have expounded further than it went.

Just from my first listen I didn’t really see too much wrong with the lyrics. I’m surprised people keep bringing it up. Maybe I need to listen again.

Yeah I thought the lyrics were pretty typical for them.

  21. They actually are, except here they're way more obvious now because there isn't a bunch of instrumentation distracting from them. I've always thought Brent said some weird-ish stuff about women, like in "Miss Erray" and on this record on "Pet Names"

some of the lyrics are definitely a bit questionable (Pet Names for sure... and i really don't like all the mentions of phones on this album. i know we are all obsessed with our phones but really...) but, i do notice and appreciate that the songs are trying to tell a story and have a personality to them. and i see the focus on songwriting instead of technicality. obviously it may have been a misstep or just not for me in some cases but, regardless i appreciate the effort.

connector was a bit less consistent in that regard i think... "Slow Dancing Forever" in my opinion is the most perfect version of what they were trying to do with this album (with the pop sensibility and focus on songwriting versus instrumentation), and i think that song might be better than most of whats on this album. but some of the lyrics from that album, like "Miss Erray" talking about breakup sex, stand out to me as more cringeworthy and less effective than songs like "Pet Names" which the meaning of the song is just more blunt.

i enjoy this new album for what it is, and it's definitely not bad. but in comparison to previous efforts, it falls a bit flat. the highs and lows of connector and satori are definitely more obvious. but the risk of not having dynamic like that, is that the whole album while consistent, comes off as boring.

Exactly. I honestly like Connector the least of their work. Hard to say about this album yet, but on first listen it tries something new. Which I like.

It mixes the proggy with the pop better than Connector.

I like about half of Connector more than anything on here and I think this has lower lows too. Always surprises me when anyone thinks that's not easily their best work.

  25. Yeah Connector, at least musically (haven't paid much attention to the lyrics on it, besides the weird shit about break up sex on Miss Erray) is their most interesting and cohesive release.
