Adored this so much. So glad this movie exists. Also glad that I can finally read through the thread lol
I watched this tonight finally. I agree with everyone that is right in here and I disagree with anyone who is wrong in here.
There's only We're Going to the World's Fair on Max and then their Slenderman documentary: edit: the embed won't play, but the actual Vimeo link will
They are also releasing a novel that’s considered the end of this “movie trilogy”. I believe it was originally intended as a 3 season TV show
I thought this was really, really great. It might be the most loving re-creation of the late nineties I've ever seen in a movie. I'm a few years younger than the characters, but it felt like it pulled from very specific memories I have of that time, like my mom taking me with her to vote in '96 election. Not sure how fully I can unpack some of the themes as white cis person, but the way it explored how we used to engage with and discover art, form friendships and shape ourselves through it, and how our perspective on that art and, in turn, the people we were at the time changes over the years, just amazing.
Honestly, as a non-trans white person, I think we can appreciate the themes that might not impact us the same while taking stock in the bigger picture. That's why I loved this film so damn much. There are layers of accessibility and, theoretically, something for everyone.
Oh for sure. I was really just trying to say that a lot resonated with me in this, while acknowledging that I'm probably not the right person to write about it as a trans movie specifically.
Yeah, definitely get what you were saying, just echoing why this works for me so well even as not the primary intended audience lol
Yea I'm in the same boat. I am a straight white male so the trans allegory isn't what I relate to here but I came away still deeply impacted by it. Really special work
Jane on The Big Picture Pod was great. She seems to be pretty proud of making divisive art and level-headed when people say they don’t get it or it doesn’t resonate with them.
