Yeah, I just don’t see a majority of the jokes on the show hitting if you don’t live in New York or LA. Like, “Entourage” or “Sex and the City” had more mass appeal than this. And I say this as a fan of Rachel Sennott.
I watched episode 3 and I feel like only the dude who was in English Teacher has nailed the right vibe so far. He’s playing a terrible guy in a kind of delicious fun way, which I think is what a show like this needs to be very heavy on. The other characters feel like they’re trying to thread the needle on poking fun but doing it in a cutesy way and keeping their coolness and they should just be unrelentingly awful and have fun being awful and perceived as awful by onlookers in the show.
Yeah he’s easily the best part. The nepo baby is the worst. Poorly written and acted. That scene at her dad’s company was particularly bad.
"I'm not gay, I'm Catholic" is maybe the best line yet, and as someone who grew up in youth groups, I know multiple people exactly like that
The last line of the episode to the Uber driver to stop laughing like that felt like a Chair Company cross over line.
elijah wood crashing out to shrek/all star was very funny. this was definitely my favorite episode but i wouldn’t say i loved it.
Everyone's so attractive, but liek, that shouldn't be the only reason I watch something. They're all playing such terrible ppl too, which I know is the point, but ughhh. As someone who grew up in LA w immigrant parents, I guess following a group of privileged transplants isn't that appealing to me
Episode had moments but it is still off/figuring out what it is. Characters’ intelligence and self-awareness shift sequence to sequence based on what wacky scenario they’re trying to present. This could be fun once they define the reality (is this heightened reality or a full-on cartoon?) and give the characters more consistency so it’s more satisfying to see how they react to the scenarios. Maybe have the main character be more like a Michael Bluth who is trying to be the normal one but they can never fully be normal because they are part of the weird world. Right now, she’s weird and trying to be part of the weird world and just running occasionally into even crazier and weirder people.
The satire feels off. I feel like the main character should have just been an old friend who gave up on a manager career and is now living as a normie and Tallulah shows up like a wrecking ball and causes her to get pulled back into the weird world and Josh H can be the exact same character as a true normie witnessing the relapse. They probably considered that but decided the selling point of this is seeing Rachel Sennott be the cheeky cool ironic hot mess star.
I remember I think there was an Adam Friedland bit on Chapo years ago about how Entourage was "low consequence low stakes vibes based TV that only could work in the pre-2016 era" and I was thinking how that relates to this show. It almost weirdly feels like it's the wrong time/place for a show like this.
I understand the sentiment of this not being for everyone but I feel like it's not Rachel's fault per se, people should be giving diverse creators the chance to tell their stories, Issa Rae deserves more
